G'Day w8indq and welcome to SRP.
Go to your local signwriter and ask if he has any acrylic in his rubbish bin.
Pick the colour you like and go to it with a coping saw and sandpaper - the instructions are in the WIKI (library) or in the workshop forum sticky.
In no time at all you'll have a set of scales that you can be proud of.
Try your local hobby shop for 1/16 rod or welding shop for TIG filler rod (I use tobin bronze).
I can't help with washers in NZ, however, if you want to join us for the catch-up in Brisbane on the 21st, you'll get some there.Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Kia Ora & Welcome to SRP.
There's a couple of sellers for washers in the USA, microfasteners.com is one that jumps to mind. I found them to be cheaper than buying locally in OZ.
I've used recycled Kauri in the past for scales so know what you're talking about . So easy to work with too. Look forward to see your work. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
