    That would be a good way to start until the muscle memory kicks in.
    I've tried it and it is quite comfortable.

    Welcome to SRP.
    The biggest risk in stropping is not the deflection afforded by a hanging strop but what you do with the right hand.
    Learn the principles first & develop the dexterity by practicing on a homemade newspaper strop. Less risk to your razor than making mistakes on leather.
