Default G'Day from Forest Lake, Brisbane, Australia

    G'day from Forest Lake, Brisbane

Just registered after recently entering the world of straight razor shaving and having this site recommended to me by the vendor who sold me a nice Dovo Bismarck. My very first purchase about 6 weeks ago was from a US internet site that came up from a google search on "Straight Razor" and bought myself a Straight Razor starter kit with a "Shave Ready" Dovo 5/8" and a Buckingham & Sons strop and accessories. That was before I was directed to this site and have since found some opinions on the brand of strop and accessories I have and I must agree with those and recommend better alternatives.

The Dovo I have used a few times with moderate success on my cheeks but have real trouble on my upper lip and on my chin where the razor or its novice user is really having trouble getting the blade to draw accross the beard and cut the tough hair that grows there. I have cut myself on every attempt and so will start over. After doing some readings here I will get my Dovo 5/8 professionally honed and try it without stropping to rule out poor stropping technique and go from there. In the meantime will continue to practice shaving using my Dovo shavette and rewatching instructional videos to make sure I am approaching those trouble spots correctly.

Enough about my first few shaves. Can anyone recommend a sharpening service, if not close to south west Brisbane, then one that would service that area at all please?

    Many thanks in anticipation,
    Motor Mouth

Well, how's about this! Another Aussie ! It's On! Welcome Mate and hold on tight. We shall take you for a strop!
The blokes are congregating! Them Dovos never are shavers till honed. You will find someone there to help!

Motor Mouth, If you're doing nothing on the 21st of this month try and come along to the get together at Coopers Plains. I'm sure one of the boys will have their rocks there to give that razor a touch up for you.

The details are "...1pm to 6pm on the 21st of this month. You can park in the car park at the front of the church and walk down the side on the left. The address is 1 The Village Avenue, Coopers Plains..."

Otherwise get in touch with str8raz0r (Stu), Havachat (Geoff) or Jimbo (James), any one of who should be able to help you out. James is on my side of town, but he works the other side of the river. Stu and Geoff live more locally to you.
Or you can always visit me and I will help you out too.

    Hi Mick,

Thanks for responding and for the kind invitation. I think I will take you up on the Coopers Plain invite but I wouldn't want to take advantage of anyone's generosity...at least not at this early stage . I have seen the Great and Powerful Oz mentioned as an expert honer and seeing as I have a few new Dovo's now (the standard Dovo 5/8 Full Hollow round tip that came with the starter kit, a new Dovo 6/8 Bismach that my wife got me for our 10th wedding anniversary and now a new 6/8 stainless steel Heritage to complete my collection, I might ask him to hone them and start there if that is OK.

Look forward to meeting you and the others at Coopers Plains and I am planning to get there at around 4pm if that is a suitable time (don't want to interrupt any services that might be on??)

    Many thanks and regards,
    Motor Mouth.

Oz is the man if you don't mind sending them away, that's for sure. You can always have one of us do a quick touch up for you down the track, or show you how to hone your own if you go that path as well. See you at the get together. Not sure how many will be there, but some are better than none. And you get to put names to faces...Unless you're like me, in which case they all end up getting mixed up in your head and doing no damn good at all .

    Welcome to SRP!

Oz definitely offers a good service from what I hear, so if you are in the market for honing I'd certainly recommend him.

    Good luck!

    James.
