Thanked: 7Hello from Chicago
Have decided to try and do something I've wanted to do for some time. This site has given me the courage to actually put a straight blade to my skin, although it hasnt happend yet
. Lots to read and lots to learn first and hopefully find a mentor to help me through the big learning curve this art requires.
Have been learning to use soap and brush as I wait for my razor and strop to arrive. Until then I will spend some time reading all this site has to offer.

Welcome to SRP and to straight shaving! There are lots of great folks here, so when you have questions, please ask away.
If you have read the beginners sections here (see under "Helpful Links" on the SRP main page) you'll already know this, but it bears repeating: make sure your razor is truly 'shave-ready' before trying it out. Blades direct from the factory won't be shave-ready, and so depending on where you bought it from, you may way to send it out for pro honing. It won't cost much, but will make a world of difference!
Some vendors do sell truly shave-ready razors, so you may not have to worry about that.
Good luck, and have fun!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 7Thanks for all the posts to my intro. I do have one question right off the bat. I have seen the phrase "shave ready" used in several articles on this site as well as others and the mention that some vendors sell razors that are "shave ready" while some others dont. However I havent seen anyone mention an actual name of a vendor, or vendors, that deliver "shave ready" razors. I just ordered a Dovo Best Quality 5/8 razor from Staright Razor Designs. If anyone else has used this vendor perhaps you could tell me what to expact as far as "shave ready" goes.

Shave Ready simply means someone (who knows what they are doing) has honed the razor for you and it is as sharp as it needs to be for shaving. If you ordered it from Straight Razor Designs, Lynn will be honing it for you and he is one of the best in the business. Plus, I believe you will get a coupon for a free rehoning when it needs it.

Hello from Chicago
Very welcome! And you did!
For a good local spot for brushes, soap/cream, etc...Merz Apothecary in the Palmer House and Lincoln Square has a ton of great stuff.

Thanked: 7Thanks for the tip on Merz, its a bit of a drive from Bridgeport but sounds well worth it. Just hate paying those shipping costs for online orders.
I see my new razor and strop have been shipped. Gives me butterflies. LOL
