Talking R0TC kid who thinks its romantic (like classical romantic not contemporary)

Evening Gents. Been on here for a few weeks now and finally after enough reading to push me over the edge I took what I gleaned from you learn'd types and bought my first (wasn't a "kit" but i mean i bought soap, a straight, etc.). Now we play the waiting game...

Always liked look and idea behind a straight shave but never gave it much thought until i bought a strop a few months back (saw one 4 cheap and wanted to use it on my pocket knife, I butcher the hell out of the little guy and thought i should spoil him for his dutiful service). During my research on how to strop without destroying it, I kept seeing information on straights. After a few hours i knew that I wanted to get me a straight. Must have gone through 50 "vintages" on ebay looking for one (through my inexperienced eyes) that did not look too pitted to repair, though for all i know there is no such thing.

Because my first shave is usually before 0400 I tend to have 5 o'clock shadow by 1300 =( and it is an absolute pain having to shave in the middle of the day, which I have to do at least twice a week. From what i have been reading though a straight shave leaves you clean for longer. Here's hoping.

Long introduction, killing time till my platoon meeting =P, Ill let you wonderful gents know how my first shave goes as my stuffs should arrive within the week.

Aloha and welcome to SRP and to Straight shaving. I lived in Savannah from 95 to 97 while I was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, it is a nice old city.

I have been Straight shaving for a week now and it does leave you cleaner if you can figure out how to do it. What I mean by that is you have to learn how and it takes practice. You have to learn all the steps pre-shave, lathering, shaving, post-shave, then there is stropping and eventually honing. Take your time don't try and do your whole face the first time and expect perfection. Enjoy the ride.
    Aloha,

    ED

Just don"'t give up because it tkes to long.. Speed comes with. I can shave as fast with a DE as a straight.. And you will love it in the field when shaving through camo with bug juice as shaving cream.

Yeah time isn't really an issue right now. I am very white, lack of sun because they pt us in the dark, and my hair is almost black so its very noticeable when i miss a spot. because of that i spend about 6 minutes or so with my mach 5 as is if i'm going to be in uniform. i can do a 30-60 second shave in an emergency but i don't like the look or feel of those and it always leaves something to be desired on my chin and neck

Welcome and I only wanted to add that you should make sure that your razor is truly shave ready. If it isn't then it should be before you use it the first time or you will likely not like the experience. There are a few great honemeisters here on this forum.

If go to the Savannah Mall there is a cigar/knife shop they at one time sold Dovo and Hen and Rooster Razors last time I was in there they only had a couple of Razors. I bought my first razor there and a strop this was a few years back the sales person I spoke with didn't know a lot about them. But you will get all the knowledge you need right here.
