    Question New to Straights.

    Hello,
I'm new to the idea of shaving with a straight razor. I've been doing a lot of internet research on the subject and recently went to "The art of Shaving" here in Studio city for a shave. The shave was great! And even more impressive was the way my face felt for the next few days. Aside from my skin being pampered by a barber; it was very smooth and irritation was minimal. I found myself reluctant to shave myself again unless I got close to a similar experience.
I like the idea of buying two razors in order to keep one slightly used for a comparison of "shave ready". I'm looking for medium priced razors to start with. Some I could practice honing. I do not seem to have access to the razor review page; how do I get access? Shoud I start with carbon steel? Or - Is it better to start practicing with a stainless steel in case I ruin it? I've been looking at sets that go for about $200 for 5 pcs or about $275 for 9 pcs. Some include a Dovo razor. These are on ebay and amazon, but I don't know how good the quality is. I just saw the SRP razor and it looks great, but way out of my budget. Maybe I've got too many questions here for an introduction, but I'm anxious to get started and this site has turned me off to a lot of my previous options that I can now see would have only led to disappointment. Thanks for that save! I'll continue my research, but some navigation through the endless material could help.

    Thank you gentlemen (and ladies?),
    Jesus

Welcome aboard to SRP. I know there is allot to take in about this so to try and be patient with it first. Trying to find blade sizes and or styles that fit you best is a big thing. It has been said that a 5/8 is a good size to stay and of course having two razors in rotation is like the norm.
There are some great vendors that are members here and one that comes to mind off course is straight razor designs..shoot them an email or give them a call..they can really help you get started.
Same goes true for whipped dog..an email or call might help you decide what is best to stay with.
I would trend to stay away from Ebay for the time being just because I don't think the reliability is always there especially for someone just starting out..and Amazon probably won't give you a shave ready razor...If it is not shave ready it just leads to a world of questions and frustrations..

    Hope this helps.

I was just browsing a link to a member in Nevada, Max Sprecher. Very nice looking blades. I will also check out the ones you mentioned. Thank you. And you are right, I know I need to be patient. I guess it's best just to start shaving and working on that technique.

    Thanks again,
    Jesus

Hindsight is 20/20....everyone here started more or less the same way no matter how long they have been doing it. It is a great place here because of that..It us not that "we" want you to go in a certain direction and all but allot have been down this road and they really just want to make sure you don't go down certain paths..I wish I would have know about this place before buying my first straight...funny three first thing I read on this forum was the do not buy list so to speak...and of course mine was on there..
Ask away..that is why it is here.
