Thanked: 28Welcome Sandhill,
I've just gotten myself started too. What kind of budget are you on? if i had the dosh I'd probably get a dovo bismarck from Straightrazordesigns with a strop kit. I had to go with a cheaper alternative as I'm on a low budget. I think you'll find everyone here to be very helpful and friendly. I found someone on this forum who lives near me and they offered to meet up with me and show me the ropes of honing right off the bat. So let people know where you're located as randydance said and maybe theres a mentor in you're area who can help =]

I used this SRP member search screen to find them. Just fill in the "Location" field.

Thanked: 2209Both are very good names. Size should be either 5/8" or 6/8" width of blade. Most new guys start off with a round point. Please understand they are not "Shaving sharp" from the factory no matter what the salesman says. We here at SRP have been thru that many times. You will need to have it sent out to one of the guys listed in the SRP Classified Ads/Services for honing. Be sure to get a strop and a quality shaving soap.

+1 to Randy's advice above.
And if the salesman says they can hone them ask him if they shave with them as well. If they don't they can't hone them. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
