    Default Hey all

    Hello everyone,

My names Mike I'm originally from York, England but recently moved to Ottawa, Canada.
I just started shaving with a straight razor as my mach 5 *expletive* really wasn't doing too much.
Unfortunately I just damaged the edge on my razor so I'm in the market for another razor to use in rotation while I have my other honed.

I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can around here and talking to you all,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

First off - welcome to Ottawa! There are a few of us in town here so there's local help on hand if need be. (For pub recommendations as well as razor stuff...)

Let me know if you want a loaner while the other is being honed. I have a bunch sitting idle.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Welcome Mike, glad to have you on the forum! Great offer from Cangooner!! Since you seem to be in a pretty good locale for help, I'll just reference our wiki, linked below. A lot of very good info, and also look at the classifieds and vendor sections, also linked below.

    Enjoy, and again, Welcome!

    Regards,
    Howard

Thank you very much for the welcome!

Thank you for the offer too, that is very kind. I'd be worried i'd damage it by accident lol but who knows I may lose my mind before mine gets honed
Also thank you for the information SirStropalot, i'll be sure to check it out.

Yeah, I can understand that! But don't worry, if I loan something out I do it in the full knowledge that it may be ruined.

If you change your mind, shoot me a PM and we can figure something out.

Welcome to Ottawa and SRP! I am frequently in Ottawa for family and business. Do not hesitate to ask for suggestions and advice with regards to straights or the city.

I thought I might share a little anecdote. When I was a student at Ottawa U and first started using a straight, I would get my hair cut at Joe & Pina on Sparks street, I am not sure if they are still in business.
Joe and his Brother are experienced italian barbers and they used real straight razors, strop and all, not shavettes. They both found it odd and amusing that I used a straight and Joe showed me how to hone my razor on a barber hone. Interestingly, they mentioned that they themselves shave with disposable cartridge razors at home.

Thanks for the info Badgister, I just recently started looking for barbers as I was sick of walking into salons with an idea and walking out with a bad haircut. I ended up driving out to Bayshore to get my hair cut at the barbers chair there but i'm sure with a little more research I could find somewhere a little closer to home. I was going to buy another razor not too long ago but it had already sold and the seller recommended I come here and also recommended I buy a vintage razor so i'll keep my eye on here as I noticed people selling them and there was a few that took my fancy but I have no idea if they ship to Canada.

What part of town are you in? There are quite a few barbers downtown. I have been going to Imperial on Bank but have been thinking of trying others too. Nothing at all wrong with Imperial, which I really like, just thought I'd mix it up a bit.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.

Keep your eyes peeled! There are quite a few folks who ship to Canada as well as Canadians on this forum. Many suffer from Rad, myself included, and are often selling shave ready razors in order to acquire other ones.

I would also suggest you check out Kijiji Ottawa, there are some interesting things to be found there too.
