Thanked: 0Sydney, Australia...hello
G'day from Sydney, Australia.
my girlfriend bought me my first straight razor as an Xmas present, eagerly await to open my present Xmas day and give it a go... I have bought myself the strop, and also Crabtree and Evelyn nomad shaving soap...
Will let you know how it goes provided I don't slice my jugular and die of blood loss

Thanked: 1587Welcome to SRP!
Do you know if your girlfriend had the razor sharpened? Depending where she bought it from it may just have a factory edge, which will not be the most pleasant of shaves for you. For example, Dovos bought from Shaver Shops are generally only factory edge and not really ready to shave with.
I don't want to put a dampener on your Christmas and I hope you've got a shave-ready razor to use. However, it's better to postpone and get it honed properly than tough out a poor shave IMO.

G'Day and welcome to SRP, Johnny.
I to hope you don't die of blood loss. It will lessen the chances if,
a) you don't turn your head to answer your GF while the blade is in contact with your neck, and
b) she doesn't grab you on the a$$ while you are shaving
Again, James gives sage advice.
We look forward to hearing how things go for you and hope you have a very happy and healthy Festive SeasonLast edited by Havachat45; 12-22-2012 at 08:54 PM. Reason: fingers don't so as they are told prior to first coffee
Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Thanked: 0Hey guys thanks for the support.
jimbo - not sure, I was at the shaver shop when my Gf bought it and the assistant said that it has been sharpened however she recommended I give it a good strop before use. It's a dovo soligen 5/8. Do you think I need to get it professionally sharpened still? If so where would you suggest I take it?
cheers

Hi Jonnyk,
One of our members living in Sydney offers a sharpening service and I can vouch for his excellent work.
Look him up on this site under Classifieds / Member Services / Razor Services in OZ by Oz

Oz offers a VERY professional honing & restoration service within but not exclusively to Australia.
I suggest sending OZ a PM to make your initial enquiry.
Cheers,

Thanked: 0So day 1 of shaving and I've nicked and cut myself quite a bit and my face didn't shave all that well, I ended up finishing the job with my Gillette...
I'm trying to establish a) whether my razor is not properly sharpened (although I gave it a thorough strop before use
Or
B) whether my technique is not correct (I did struggle a bit trying to see what I was doing and positioning my arms...
Any thoughts?
