Thanked: 2Hey from Indianapolis
I am looking into straight razor shaving and I have stumbled on this forum doing research, and I'm glad I did. I look forward to getting my first straight razor but definately will need all the help I can get on what to get and how to get it all done. I can already say thank you because I am sure I would have already blundered if I hadn't stumbled here.

Hi Sampson,
Welcome to SRP. You'll find plenty of helpful members here. I think it will help to also read through our wiki, especially the section on beginning straight razor shaving. The link is below. Also, another good read is beginners tips at this link Straight Razor Place - Welcome to Straight Razor Place . You'll find lots of good info that will help you make better decisions on what you'll want to and need to get.
Welcome, and enjoy the forum.
Regards,
Howard

Hi Sampson and welcome aboard! Lots to learn but like most of us you'll find that you will more than likely enjoy the learning part as much as the shaving part. It's a different skill and experience and it's nice to be able to turn shaving from being a "chore" that has to be endured into something that you actually look forward to doing.
Good luck!Greg

Thanked: 2Well went to the art of shaving today and my anniversary present was a Dovo from there. Pretty excited. W probably over paid but I had my wife on the ropes and I wanted to feel a razor in my hand before I bought my first. No worry I feel that if (read when) rad hits me ill be hitting up the classifieds more. But the first I wanted to feel the thing in my hand. And that is the only place I know of out here With that option. Will be hitting up for a better strop soon though. But here you go my first sr. Nothing to fancy but nice enough to be proud I hope.

Hey Sampson,
Nice razor!! Fancy doesn't shave any better than plain. Sending it out to be professionally honed might be the best thing to do now. Very few razors with a factory edge are really shave ready. Here's a current thread on AOS and shave ready. Just linking it to give you more info. http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...-loophole.html
If you do want it honed by one of our members you can find them in the classifieds and vendors, linked below. Having a professionally honed razor really makes a difference and really helps in the learning curve of shaving with a straight.
Great present from your wife, good razor, congrats!! All seems to be going well!!
Enjoy!!

Got antsy and shaved with it. Howard, I got your reply during the actual shave, and aside from a little beginners razor burn it went really well. I will be sending it to get honed soon though as though I think it cut really well I am aware my experience level is nil. It probably took me a good while to shave as I was very cautious and it was a little awkward at first but I started to feel out angles and started to get a little more comfortable as I went. I was really happy that my 5 year old wanted to watch me shave and though he didn't stay long was also very satisfying that we had some man time for a little while. All in all it was a great experience and the videos and tips from you all were and still are a great help. I am sure that if I hadn't stumbled on here before actually getting a SR I would not have been in such high spirits about this hobby now. Thank you all for helping me start this new year and adventure out in confidence.

I was kind of hoping you'd try it. Now you'll really be able to see the difference after its honed. It also really helps having it honed when the shaves don't go so well and you're trying to figure out what's not working. If you can eliminate the razor sharpness, then you can figure it's a technique issue or prep issue. The more variables you can eliminate the easier it is to analyze problems, and the faster the good shaves usually come. Sounds like your already starting to put together angles, pressure (light) and feel.
That's great having your son watch. Those are things that will stay with you for life!!!
Congrats on your successes, and Happy New Year to you and the family!!!
Regards,
Howard

Hey all,
I am still around. I am currently a recruiter and work is constant. But I am still enjoying the world of straight razor (and advocate it to all the future marines I have. Lol) I am still getting the hang of it.

Takes time, but the further you go the better it gets. Good to see a local (reasonably local) on the forums. Hang in there, you are in for a fun ride.
It's just corn syrup... Warm, blood flavored, corn syrup ...
