Just got a great setup from Aos. The Dovo strop I have has a linen side & leather side. I have a strop paste by Thiers Issard- 'Pate A Rasoir' a l'uminocyline, which the barber said was for conditioning the leather, yet I have read that this particular paste is meant to go on the linen side. The paste has no directions & I have had no definitive luck with Google. If anyone is familiar with this product & can tell me which side the paste belongs, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also in general with this type of strop should I have different types of paste on both sides & if so what kinds are recommended.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you google "TI paste", up in the right hand corner of your SRP forum screen, under notification, you will get several results. The above link has a few different fellahs explaining how they use it.

I wouldn't bother with the paste. Condition the leather side with a bit of palm rubbing to warm the leather each time you strop. That would be as far as I would go. Keep in mind I'm no fan of pastes and therefore am probably biased that way.

I'm with Mick on that one. It is one thing to have a strop for using paste and another strop for everyday use. I have no paste and a few strops. To each his own but if you go with the paste I would think it hard to go back. Maybe use without for awhile ?

Hey, thanks. I'm curious then since my strop has a linen & leather side is it a bad idea to put the Ti paste on the linen side as most people don't recommend the leather being treated?

I haven't used this product, but if you read post #4 in the reading that was recommended, you would find that others have had trouble applying the TI crayon. Personally I am not a fan of pasted strops, but they do work. Just do some reading, searching, and asking good questons. The learning curves will smooth out.

I have had the best results appying it to linen or canvas - something with texture that the paste can get stuck into !

After application, the strop is somewhat 'sticky' !

Heating the crayon & the strop substrate aids the application.

However, when applied to the strop, it does a good job.

10 - 20 laps gets the job done nicely.

For convenience however, I would stick with the usual CrOx or diamond products.

Why not try it and see if you like it ?

    Have fun !

    Best regards

I'm biased as well i have one pasted paddle strop which i hardly ever use ... like once a year or so. all of my new strops i just rub like others have said, vintage ones sometimes need a dressing to get them back into use but that is it.
once you paste a strop you need to always consider it a pasted strop the abrasives become embedded in the leather surface and are basically impossible to throughly remove. sorry.

people will try and sell you anything most of them do not know how to use straight razors or strops.

    enjoy,

    Thanks everyone,
I don't think I will be applying the paste to the leather side but I'm trying to weigh the pros & cons of applying to the linen side.

I am big fan of pasted strops and I would not paste the linen side of your only strop.

The reason for this is that with everyday use of that strop no matter how careful you are you will get cross contamination on your leather strop.

Your best bet is to ether buy a low cost dual leather paddle strop for paste or build one with some wood and an old leather belt.
