Thanked: 10Lurker becoming member
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum but not to straight shaving. I've lurked for a while but decided to dive in so I could participate in the discussions.
I actually started with my great-grandfather's KA-BAR. Nothing like your Old Man teaching you how to shave with something that he was taught with by his Dad, eh? In my home town there was an elderly barber, Mr. Gosset, who cut my hair from day one until his death just before I went to college. Shortly before he passed away, he gave me an old safety razor that I cherish to this day and used through my college years. He was the only one my Dad trusted to hone his blades and I tell ya, that old man could put a mean edge on a straight. Don't ask me what the safety is or how old, I have no idea. I'm 50 and he gave it to me when I was 17, but it's probably older than me. Once I started my career, the siren song of the straight called me back.
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself.

Thanked: 480Greetins Steve person!
Yup, we all lurked for a while I think. just seems to be the way of it. This place is a veritable treasure trove of good info, and many good people. But it sounds like you already have most of the skills! Be sure to post pictures of your razors. We like to look at them, and somebody might know a bit about them.

Steve Aloha and Welcome to SRP, thanks for the nice introduction. I had the same Barber from my first haircut until I went in the Army, it is my Father. Post up a picture of your safety razor some one here will be able to let you know what you have.

Thanked: 10Thanks everyone for the welcome! Lots of info here and it seems I learn something new every day.
Hey Ed,
I pulled out the DE razor and had to laugh at myself. I haven't looked at it in probably 25 years, but did this time and noticed it has "gillette" on the bottom. Guess that answers that, but still don't know how old it is. If he gave it to me new, it would be 33 years, so it's older than that I'm sure. Here's a couple of pics, but don't razz me too much, I know it's a bit grubby.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to SRP!!
Your Gillette is a "K" code, 1965. You'll see it by the shank in your 2nd pic. On the other side of the shank will be a 1,2,3, or 4 representing the Qtr it was produced that year.
Nice to have another Okie on the forum!! Great Shaves and again welcome!!!
Best Regards,
Howard

Thanked: 10Hey Howard!
Thanks for the info, very interesting! It has a "4" on the other side, so 4th quarter.
Yep, another Okie. Since you are in central OK, have you been to Carwin's Shave Shop on Classen in OKC? I came across it during the Xmas break. Not a bad little shop and I can get my Truefitt & Hill supplies there for the same price as online.

I believe that your DE is a Gillette Slim Adjustable. I have its Gold plated brother from the 2nd quarter of 1965 here, it is a Gillette Aristocrat Adjustable, it is the same as your Slim just Golden.
