Thanked: 0Hi Guys!
Hello to everyone!
After many weeks, lurking and sneaking around, reading everything to try to improve my skill in this amazing art of straight razors shaving, I've decided to pop in and say hello...
And to thank each one of you guys... You've made a great work here.
I'm new in this world, not only in this forum, so I'm trying to learn everything, and I've found this is the best place to get every kind of information I need. I'm still learning, of course.
But seriously, I think that in life, you'll never learn enough and you will always learning.
I'm coming from Gilette disposable blades... and I use to shave every morning, both face and head...
I'm starting to get really acquainted in these last days with my straight razor, that is a simple Dovo, should be 5/8, I'm already well acquainted with soaps and brushes... but now, it's true, they're essential. But even before, I realized that the preparation makes the difference, that's why I always used oils, proraso pre-cream and cream... even because I've got a thick strong beard... that is not so easy to cut.. on my face, especially neck area, is pretty difficult to get that smoot baby butt sensation!
What else to say... I'm writing from Down Under, Sydney... I'm temporary here.
But I'm from Italy!
So.. Cheers!

Welcome to SRP!
Sounds like you already have a good routine going, that is one that works for you. the neck is often the only place that i cannot quite get perfect my goal is FSS (Face Sitting Smooth) though not BBS (Baby Butt Smooth) and i've been using a straight for over 30 years. when you think about it the only people who will know you neck is not perfect is SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) and yourself. strecting and odd angled passes are the keys to a close neck shave; just remember to stop before you get to he razor burn level.
being close is much nicer than being burned.
enjoy,
jim

Thanked: 0Thank you Jim!
Well, I don't really have a well formed or rocked routine... I'm just trying.. and trying again.
I'm not satisfied yet, sometimes not at all, but at least, in some cases I can see some results.
I get that... what you said is the bloody truth... odd angles and angled passes.
But even a well honed razor.
Mine is factory honed, so...not so good. Actually, I'm trying to solve this issues, 'cause, if may I haven't any problem in WTG, problems come when XTG and ATG, or trying to ATG... It pulls, I start to get burned, so I need to stop.
Cheers!

There might be people near sydney that could help you get that Dovo truly sharp. try clicking on "community" then "member list"; "search members- advanced search"; set the location to "sydney" then sort by last visit that should give you a good idea of local resources.
if you can find a mentor a hour or three withthem would be like 6 months of reading.
enjoy,
jim

Thanked: 4249You really a sharp and smooth razor to do ATG so your factory honed razor is probably not quite there yet, myself i usually do a two pass shave one pass WTG and the second pass a mix of XTG and some ATG, dont dispair it will all work out for you.

Thanked: 983Not that good with the lingo then, I see. The cut-throat can be a she if you want it to be, but the turn of speech I was using is the oh so common Australianism, "She'll be right mate!" Had nothing at all to do with your razor...Rather your shaving technique, after some more practice.
