Thanked: 3Hello from Morgan Hill, California
Hello,
My name is Scott, currently from Morgan Hill, CA, which is sandwiched between the Silicon Valley, and the Garlic capitol of the world, Gilroy. I've been lurking on these boards for a few weeks now, reading a lot of the good advice which you fine folks prepared specifically for me without even knowing I'd be here! Or did you all know? See, I asked for, and received, a new Dovo straight razor for Christmas this year. A friend of mine got one some 20+ years ago, and I've always been intrigued. Just a few months ago I decided I wanted to give it a try. So, Christmas night, after opening my new razor, I Googled and found this website, and lo and behold there was a posting specifically about me!
I did not, however, find Lynn's posting about the first shave, and what you are supposed to do. So, on Dec. 26, I stropped my razor (having learned from the great Stroptober videos!), and dove right in, shaving my entire face. To my wife's astonishment, I came out with not one cut! I was pretty surprised myself. Had to be beginner's luck. I'm a once-every-two-days shaver with sensitive skin, particularly on my neck, so I waited two days before trying again. Three actually, as it turned out. Second shave, still no cuts, but shaving is more difficult, and is taking longer. I'm feeling pretty cocky! This time, though, there was some irritation afterward -- just like Lynn said there would be, as I would later find out. Two days later, third shave, still no cuts, but it took forever! Many passes. Skin is VERY irritated this time.
This degrading of my shave led to frustration, which led me to read more and more in these forums. I came to the conclusion that my razor needed to be honed. So early this week I sent my razor to Lynn. I can't wait to get it back and try again! I expect there will be some cuts coming my way when I start back up. Gotta pay my dues...
While my razor is with Lynn, I'm shaving with my old Mach III. First time back to it, I cut myself pretty badly. It's a sign...
Anyhow, I'm very glad I found this site. I'm looking forward to this journey, and the advice of those of you who are much farther along on it.
Scott
