Default Hello from the Bluff City (Memphis)

    Hi,

I was born and raised in South Louisiana, but am here in Memphis finishing up my residency in internal medicine. Just got my first "straight" (Parker shavette) after shaving DE for quite a bit. Love it so far and regret not switching over sooner. What I'm really looking forward to is getting the real deal... I've been researching some options, and this site is so helpful. Looking forward to learning more!

    Welcome to SRP!
Since you are already used to wet shaving and even have a shavette , you are well on the way. you will find that a real straight razor is more comfortable to shave with as the blade is more forgiving.
while you are looking around feel free to ask questions there are many razor shaped objects out there and in the beginners section of the wiki there is help on avoiding them.

    enjoy,
    jim

Thanks, Jim. I've been reading about the razors to avoid. Still in the beginning stages of looking for a good beginner shave-ready and strop, as I have neither.

Well depending on your desires and finances you have a wide selection to choose from. Larry at whippeddog has starter sets for around $50, Straight razor designs, classic shaving, vintage blades llc all have starter sets for around $120 all of those vendors and other found on this site will sell you a well honed razor and a decent or better strop.
the hard point is selecting the looks of the razor, which is a shame since the shaving edge is all that really matters and for similarly sized and ground razors there is no difference in the shave between the low end and high end razors.

    enjoy,
