    Smile Hello from Croatia

    Hello, everyone!

I come from Croatia and I had an interest in straight razor shaving for about a year and a half. I recently decided to buy my first straight razor and in the absence of vendors I know of, I began searching the web and eventually found out about this site. I've been rummaging through the material here and I decided I'm ready to buy my first straight razor. It's being hand-honed by an expert and shipped to me as I write this.

Now I'm more concerned about keeping my razor sharp. I don't know of anyone who could hone it when it gets dull (or is the technical term "unsharp"?), so if there's anyone here from Croatia who can do this for me, send me a message. In any case, I'd like to learn to do my own honing eventually. I've seen some material on that too, but I'd like to hear from others on this. Is it common for straight razor shavers to hone their own blades? Is it a difficult skill to learn? Is it a matter of preference of having it honed by yourself, or by an expert?

Any advice beyond what the fabulous Wiki on this site offers is much appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Nikola

    Hello and welcome to SRP.

You have made a very fine start by reading up on the various parts of this site.
I can't seem to remember any members from Croatia that offers honing, but there are many members in your general area of Europe that I'm sure could lend a hand when needed.

Yes, many of us hone our own razors, but the general advice is to master one skill at the time.
That means, get the shaving and stropping down pat first, then focus on learning to hone.
Once the shaving is somewhat mastered you have crossed the half way mark by a margin in my opinion.
Send your razor out to be honed if needed while learning the actual shave.

Once you do decide to tackle the final hurdle, the honing, check out the videos by Lynn and gssixgun.
Both are members here, and have published many a video on all things regarding honing.
And do check out the thread JaNorton.
It is a very useful resource to beginners and experienced honers alike.

    Good luck!

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanks, I'll be sure to check all this out. I'm not sure which thread you are referring to, though. Is this it?

Aloha Nikola and welcome to SRP! I have seen a few members here on the forum from Croatia. If you go to the top of the page find the Community drop down select Member List, then on the right side click search members, then select Advanced Search, go down to location and enter "Croatia" you should get 16 results. Member Jock referred me to your local shaving site, brijacnica.com • Index page

Thanks for the link. I've no idea why I didn't find that site when I was looking for straight razor shaving info. And thanks for the trouble.
