Thread: The Dane(s) are coming!!!

All new noob from denmark, 42 years old and havent tried straight razor shaving yet. still waiting for the razor to get back from honing.

Trying a straight razor is something I´ve thought about for some time now, because 1. the prices for the gilette stuff is through the roof and 2. from what i hear you get a much better shave from the straights.

last week I found a deal for a dovo solingen "best quality" and took the leap. (although '"deals" in denmark is considerably higher in price than in the states)

I also bought some different shaving soaps, to try out for difference (blue wilkinson sword, Mitchells wool fat, Crabtree and Evelyn sandalwood and lastly men-Ü shaving creme).

For brush i bought a Prorasso boar brush. as a free gift there was also a brush with synthetic hairs with the Men-Ü shave creme.

While I wait for the razor to return i use the time reading., so thanks for all the great advise and discussions in here... I´m REALLY looking forward to try my hand at this.

G'day Gargoyle47, It sounds like you have settled on some good choices there with razor and soaps. I've heard good things about the Men-U synthetic brush too, but haven't tried one myslef to know for sure. Mitchells Wool Fat(MWF) is highly regarded and I use C&E Sandalwood myself on a regular basis.
Where or who is doing your honing for you if I may ask?

Keep in mind regardless of how sharp the razor is, it is still a learning curve, a sharp razor just takes the edge out of the equation when looking for the required fixes and improvements needed in our shaves.
Ask away about anything you think of, as there are no silly questions except those questions not asked. All the best for when you get started.

yeah I´ve gathered as much that the sharpness is only a part of the equation, and I,m fully prepared to go around looking like a human pizza until i get the necessary skill not to cut and nick myself

The honing is being done by a company called "mighty sharp" and comes highly recommended in Denmark (trust pilot) you can see there website here: Mighty-SHARP

And thanks I´m sure I will ask a BUNCH of questions as soon as i get started on the shaving

it will be intersting to know if they actually hone your razor well. many sharpening services think they do but unless the person who does the honing is a straight shaver they usually do not do a great job.

with those prices i see why your ancestors set out to loot the rest of europe back in the day

well for how well mighty-sharp does the job I cant yet tell you, (if i ever can because as a newbie i have nothing to compare it to) And whether he´s a straight shaver as well I also cannot say.

The only guidelines I have at the moment is the trust pilot consumer reviews i lean to. i hve found 2 consumers who had their straights honed there and they gave 5 of 5 stars for the result. mighty-sharp also hones scissors for hairdressers and barbers.

As for prices in Denmark they are simply insane... and if i wanted to buy a straight razor from the states i probably still have to wrestle with the danish customs who are VERY strict. and will add about 30% to the price.

Congrats on taking the plunge! I've always said that what this world needs are for more Danes to take up straight razor shaving.

Seriously, I just love straight razor shaving. It took me a long time before I felt I had mastered it, but it is well worth it.

Ok guys heres finally some answers regarding the Mighty-sharp hones. i spoke to him over the phone today. First of all, he uses a straight shaver himself and has for years. what he has to say for gillete mach and fusion translates badly from danish, but it was something in the lines of "Mickey Mouse pieces of shit for adults"

second about the honing: he hones the razors on a 8k wetstone and then strops them. He here advised me as a beginner to start stropping on balsawood instead. till i get the hang of it. then go to leather stropping as my technique improves. what is your thoughts on this?

Still waiting for the mailman to drop of my razor....it should be here today or tomorrow
