Thanked: 4Seems like a friendly place!
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest, (Anacortes, WA). I'm just about to take the plunge and dive into the world of straight shaving. Actually, after reading so much good information here I've decided to just dip my feet in first and see how it goes.
I love old tools that were made well enough to deserve being cared for over the years. I've enjoyed restoring vintage edge tools and look forward to learning about, maintaining and using straight razors. It's kind of neat to see that some of the vintage tool makers I'm familiar with also made razors.
Newbie question: Did anyone out there used to really dislike shaving for one reason or another, but now actually looks forward to it because of the switch to straight razors? That's kind of what I'm hoping for!

Welcome to SRP!
To answer your question, there have been quite few posts by folks that hated shaving and then saw the light. ...and a very few deciding not to like shaving after trying it with poor equipment and understanding.
Come on in!

Welcome to SRP. To answer you question, I didn't mind shaving with my previous method...it was a chore that had to be done. What really started to bug me was the increasing cost of cartridges and the lack of being able to find what I was looking for. I was a Gillette Sensor guy and this was about the time they introduced the Mach 3 onto the world. Tried it and hated it, but finding Sensor blades became difficult. I decided to give straight razors a try and had a miserable experience. Then I found SRP and the rest is history. I do look forward to the "me" time shaving with a straight razor provides. Plus it's a fun and addicting hobby, I've be able to amass a modest collection of razors, custom brushes, strops, and various creams and soaps. I can't imagine any guy being proud of his Fusion collection. If you can, you should go to the PNW meet, you'll meet a great group of guys and as Glen said, be miles ahead on the learning curve. Hope you enjoy your straight experience.

Thanked: 4Reardensteel,
I got a kick out of your post. It's pretty much my story right down to the brands. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was when I went to the store to buy Sensor cartridges last week. I once again balked at the price and decided to try the cheaper store brand generics. Arriving at the check out counter the woman manning it whispered to me that they'd been getting a lot of returns on them. I guess they're pretty lousy. I marched back and got the Gillettes but swore that it would be the last time. I hate the fact that so many things we buy today are disposable. Its hard to have pride in any of your "stuff" when most of it is only useful for a short time and then thrown away. So, I've got a nice restored straight razor from a dealer heading my way, and a strop. I was already part way converted, having used brushes and soap for years with the other razors. I've been reading a lot about how to safely learn the skills to use a straight razor and I'm looking forward to the experiance. I'm sure it will be a bit frustrating at first but I'm confident that I'll decide it's the way to go.
Regards,
Bruce
