Thread: Wade & Butcher fan from VA

Hello, all!

I'm a wet-shaving fan from Virginia, who has recently transitioned from a Gem Lather Catcher safety razor to straight razors.

I have been experimenting with a Feather Artist Club for a while, and once I started getting acceptable results, I've switched to straight razors. Right now, I'm using a Filarmonica, but I've just won (what I think of as) an amazing hollow-ground frameback Wade and Butcher from ebay, and I feel that once I get it restored, it will be my main tool.



I will therefore be needing some good advice from the more experienced people on this forum--who to send it to, what to look out for, etc. Not to mention sharing many great shaving experiences with my fellow shaving aficionados!

and welcome to the forum from Tri-Cities area TN.

There are a lot of great craftsmen in here and if you see some work you like contact the fellow that did it. You might find after you get this razor that a little polish is all it needs. Some razors look better just the way they are because say if you want it mirror finished , you are going to loose that etching. Maybe. At any rate welcome and good luck sticking with 1 or 2 razors. That is what I said too !

Thanks for the advice (oh, and I already know that I won't stick with 2 razors! My wallet seems to also have a dark foreboding about it!).

I am in agreement with you about the mirror finish--I do like for a blade to look its age, with that "organic" appearance of the steel, as long as it's functional. I will post better pics of the W&B once I receive it.

Welcome to SRP. Nice W&B. Check out our classifieds. Member services is where you'll find a honer and a restorer if you want one. With a razor like that I'd just use metal polish on a q-tip and a paper towel. Keep the antique look and once honed a great shaver.

Thats an awesome razor!!! I have the same exact one! Go for a nice mellow polished finish to it, youll be happy. Just have who evers working on it work out that black spit stain on the spine and maybe bring it down to a 1000 grit wet with a little hand polishing to follow, it wont be mirror but it will shine....
