Hello from Portland, OR.
Looking to get my first straight razor. I'll need all the supplies to get started. Any tips or advice will be welcomed with open arms. Thanks in advance gents!

Thanked: 13245Welcome to SRP
Let me give you a little heads up, we have a large and quite active PNW membership, we also have our Spring Meet up this month, details are in the linked thread, if you can anyway make that meet, I promise you will learn more in the day or two you spend there, then in 6 months of reading here...

If you can, I would get the SRD 3" latigo strop since Lynn and Don sell replacement leathers in case you damage it, or want to try a different kind. I also bought the 3" strop with hard pressed wool and your choice of the second material for pastes $50, it comes in handy for sure, and a stick of chromium oxide. You dont need the other two now, but its something to consider for later on. Around the next 3 months or so, go ahead and be thinking about a good finisher for when the pastes arent doing their job anymore. 8k grit and up wil do the job. Norton 8k and naniwa 12k, or barbers hone or natural finisher are the preferences here. Like I said, you dont ned them now, but reading up on these and learning about them now will give you a head start, and alow you to make a good educated choice versus buying something blind you know nothing about. Welome to SRP!
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
