Thanked: 0Newbie from North Carolina
Hey everyone,
My name is Dave and I live in the Charlotte area in North Carolina. I recently began using the Art of Shaving products after I got a sample in the mail and then became with getting the closest shave possible. I read a lot on your forum before making the move to using a straight razor. I got my Boker King Cutter about 3 weeks ago and have been using it since. I am always looking for more information and tips on how to get the best shave with the straight razor as I do find it irritates my skin less (when I don't slice it open) than the Mach3 I was using. I decided to join the forum today to find more information and any products that people recommend. I look forward to learning more about straight razor shaving and hearing anybody else's experiences.

Hey Dave! Welcome to the forums. I live in Hope Mills, NC. It's nice to see someone else from North Carolina who's also new. I started a week ago with my Dovo 5/8 Best Quality straight razor and I'm already seeing a big difference in my shaves with the straight compared to the Mach 3 cartridge that I've used in previous years, not to mention the electric razor I've used for the past three years. Anyway, from one newbie to the next the best advice I can give you with a straight razor is, first and foremost, use very light pressure. Another thing that I learned fairly quickly is that when you go WTG you should use about a 30° angle. When you go XTG you should use about a 15° to 20° angle, In ATG you should use about a 5° angle. I have very coarse hair around my chin and the top part of my neck and when I shave ATG I have the blade almost flat and by doing that the razor seems to glide right through the hair. You can find the angles I mention in the wiki on the website here. I didn't read all the wiki before I started shaving, but had I done so I would've known about the angles and would've had less irritation and razor burn after my first three shaves. Good luck!
