Thanked: 0New from Los Angeles area
Went to a mall a couple of weeks ago and saw a shop, "The Art of Shaving". Was there with the wife and mother in law, so just did some looking. The next week went back by self and bought a Dovo 5/8 razor, and strop, and intro product kit. After a couple of shaves and some reading and utube viewing, I'm sending it in to be professionally honed. My dad used to talk about wanting to try using a straight razor, but he never did this in my presence.
Like one of the guys on utube says, there is a steep learning curve to this. One site I read suggested to do the "flat" areas first with the SR and the usual with other areas first. That makes sense to me.
I think I'm attracted to SR shaving for the skill set needed, the nostalgia, the blade, the ritual (soaping, hot towel, etc.). I know it will definitely take more time, but I look forward and think about the event of shaving....... See you in the funnies!

Welcome to SRP and the fascinating world of straight shaving. You will find lots of info here and plenty of friendly, helpful people.
Shaving with a cut throat is a lost art but if you stick to it and practice you will soon be experiencing the best shaves you have ever had.
One bit of advice I like to give to newbies just starting out is staying consistent with your routine. Become very repetitive and consciously aware of how you shave paying attention to pre and post shave routines, angles, skin stretching and pressure or lack there of! Add variations to your routine as you grow more comfortable with your razor, once you get it back honed of course.
Good luck and keep us updated on your progress!I shave because I want to, not because I have to!
