    Default Just starting out.

I have been reading the forums for a while and figured I would post on here.

I recently started wet shaving. I started with a double edged razor and then a straight razor. I'm guessing when I was using the double edged razor is when I caused a problem on my face and/or made it worse and ended up with an abscess that I had to have surgically drained. I'm waiting to heal before continuing shaving. Any way I recently went to see my grandparents and they gave me my great grandfathers straight razor. I just thought I would show it off.

There is a nick in the blade near the heel that I will try to hone out and I have already done light sanding on the blade with 1000 grit sand paper to clean the rust from the blade. I was not sure if I should do anything else besides sharpen it? Then once I get the go ahead from the doctor try and shave with it.

    Welcome to SRP

If you want it to be a beauty queen, It should be sent out for restoration and honing.

If you want a clean shaver, You could sand it yourself, but I would suggest sending it out for honing.

If you want to know what I would do, I would just make sure all the rust is killed and put it in a display case. I would do this due to the sentimental value and the wear pattern.

I tried to hone it some and found that by the large rust spot that the edge would just crumble so I think I will just put it up for display and show it off.
