Thanked: 0New Member from KY
Hi all- My name is Tyler.
I am a 25 year old from KY. Just got by first straight razor by Dovo (Ebony Spike Point, Carbon Steel 5/8"). I couldn't quite grow the full beard I wanted, so I figured I would take my shaving experience to the next level. I am a fan of bourbon, craft brews, baseball, horse racing, and fly fishing--- I figured shaving with a straight razor would fit in to my interests well. Just completed the first shave with the straight razor-- it has been professionally honed but I didn't find it to be an incredibly close shave. I went from long stubble to short stubble and finished with my Mach Turbo. However, no nicks and no real razor burn. I am sure it just takes practice-- any recommendations on a closer shave/technique??
Thanks all.

Hi Tyler,
Welcome to SRP!!
The first shave is an adventure, for sure. I did about the same as you the first time. Didn't have long stubble, but managed to keep most of what I started with. There are so many things that can be off on the first time out... prep, blade angle, lather, blade sharpness, and on. You said your razor was professionally honed. Was it done at a local sharpening shop, sent off to someone, or maybe was sold as shave ready?
Rather than try to trouble shoot everything, it would benefit you and us if you would read through the wiki, linked below, which covers the first shave and much more. After reading through you might find what some of your problem areas were.
Also the Beginners Tips, also linked below, has some excellent advice and helpful info.
After reading through those it'll help to narrow down your questions, and I know all the members will be ready to help with any questions you have.
Glad to have you on the forum, hoping the shaves will improve quickly. Shaving with a straight is a challenge in the beginning, but also fun and rewarding!!
Enjoy!!
Best Regards,
Howard
I thought I'd link this video too. It's about how honers test shave, but Glen covers prep, blade angle, etc. and it should help you out also.
