    Cool Hello from North Alabama

Hey I'm Shawn. Your average poor as hell college student. I've been lurking around the forums for a while and have finally decided to bite the bullet and buy my first straight razor. Being a little light on cash I've been thinking about getting a "Sight Unseen" from the whipped dog (Maybe even one of the ones with blemishes for cheaper) and a strop from the same place. My reasoning is to go cheap is because I WILL make mistakes to begin with and would rather do it with something that would be easier financially to replace. I would also like to learn how to hone my own blades so I could learn on a cheaper blade than a more expensive one.

Any advice or recommendations before I make my purchase?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome Shawn,

Take a look here: Straight Razors - Straight Razor Place Classifieds

There are some deals that are not too expensive and I think would be a better deal then a sight unseen.
    That is just my opinion.
A LOT of people are happy with Whipped Dog stuff.

Hello Shawn and welcome to SRP! The first mistake is to buy cheap, if you buy cheap you will get subpar and this could hurt your chances at success and make this disappointing. And then who are you going to sell your cheap kit to, to recover your costs? You dont have to break the bank to get quality. Start out with the classifieds and find a decent razor and strop at an affordable price. I would rather see you take your time and build a proper kit no matter how humble than to see you get stuck with cheap crap and a less than stellar experience.

Either should serve you well and is of sufficient quality to pass on to the next generation. Just think of how many shaves that will be, all enjoyable.

Will most likely go ahead and get the Ralf Aust. Already have a shaving bowl, brush, and soap ordered. Anything else I need to get started right?

Welcome to SRP! Not sure where in North AL you are, but I'm in Huntsville. If you need any help/advice with your str8 razor, just let me know. I also have a number of wet shaving supplies for sell in my office, just let me know if you need anything.

Thanks for all the advice and I'm in Florence so we're not to far apart. If I need anything I'll be sure to let you know.
