    Greetings & Welcome Nick.

As ratbag said, you've hit the motherload of good help & attitudes for those wanting to take up the old art. FWIW, Its been 3 yrs for me this mo. The joy shows no sign of fading. If I don't get to use a straight, I'd rather not shave.

It sounds like you've gotten at least 1/3 of the critical first skills acquired - beard prep & making lather. Cool. The other two are the shave technique itself and stropping. Both will take a bit of time. The rewards are fabulous.

When you make the plunge for gear, probably the most important one will be to have the edge on whatever razor be really good. 'Needs to be sharp but also quite smooth. Sharp by itself is great in kitchen cutlery, but in shaving - its a recipe for carnage. The 'first shave' link on the home page would be hard to improve upon. Perhaps the best way to learn would be some face to face time w/ an experienced user. It'll shorten the learning curve alot.

'Hope you're enjoying the DE shaves for now. 'Look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the most Friendly, Helpful and Informative Site on the Web!!

My good friend, pinklather has said as much or more than I could!

It’s a wonderful ‘Art’! My son took it up at 17 years old! When my old Boy Scout Scoutmaster (Owen) found out that I’d taken up the Art, he gave me 7 razors including his fathers!!!!

I told him that they were heirlooms and that they should go to his two sons, but he said; “To them, they are nothing but chunks of steel, I know that you will take care of them, and use them”.

When I got the first one cleaned up a bit and honed, I took it to him to let him see that I did indeed want to take care of some pieces of his heritage.

When he looked at the blade and could now see the etching, he exclaimed ‘Whoa, you can actually see what it says”!

Owen is going on 93 years old this year and is a Marine who survived Iwo Jima. I treasure not only the razors that he graciously gave me but the life lessons he instilled in me when I was a young boy! They have served me well!!

If you do decide to join in the Art, you may be surprised by what may come your way, and who you may encounter along the long road we travel!

I wouldn’t trade a single day of the journey that I’ve traveled so far even if by trading a day would allow me to live for 100 years more! It’s truly been a journey that I’ve enjoyed and the friendships that I’ve made are priceless!!

    Again, Welcome!
