Thanked: 0Bought a new razor
Hi, I just bought a new razor set with a strop for the bf. Both of us don't know much about razors. He wanted a razor for his birthday from vintagestraightrazor but I decided to do some research to see if the company was reputable...and that lead me to this site. And I'm glad I found it! I have a new Ralf Aust set on it's way that I bought from straight razor designs and I got him the DVD so he could learn all about it. It seems really interesting and it makes me want to buy a razor myself, but I don't know if it's worth it since I don't grow much of a mustache or beard.

I believe that you did well! Lynn speaks highly of those razors, so far I've only heard good things about them.
It will come shave ready, all he has to do is to rinse the oil off the blade, do the face prep then lather and shave.
I would advise him to just do the sideburns to neckline to start with, then finish with what ever he's been using.
I was wondering if by chance he is using the canned shaving stuff. If he is, you can get a decent beginner's brush, mug and soap at a Rite Aid, Target and I think WalMart for $10-$12 it's sold by Van Der Hagen. While there are better ones out there, it's a fair way to get started.
I hope he enjoys the ride.

Thanked: 39Hi,
this surely is a good choice. Ralf Aust is a wonderful razor - got one myself - and since You bought it from Lynn, You will receive it honed and definitely shave ready. Best start for a good experience.
Still there will be quite a learning curve. And the best thing is to take You time, lots of time.
One important thing, besides cutting Yourself, will be stropping of the razor. As You will later be doing that every time before You shave with Your straight, it is one thing You will have do become good at. If done wrong, You can cut the leather and dull the blade. It's not rocket science, just take it slow ...

Thanked: 0Thanks for the affirmation and tips guys! And he actually does own a brush, soap, and mug so he's all set. I hear that castle forbes has some nice shaving cream but it's a bit expensive for me on top of the set. So I think I'll wait to see how he likes the whole razor experience.

You did very well.
The set you bought will serve him well for years!
The important thing now is to get him to join us here at SRP.
We'd be sure to help him out as best we can. And we can quite a bit
Good luck to him, and to you.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....
