Thanked: 0Hello All
Hello Everyone,
After years of using a multi-blade cartridge razors I finally got fed up with buying expensive replacement cartridges and decided to take the plunge with the straight razor. I've only done 3 shaves so far with my Boker Edelweiss but I thoroughly enjoyed it and think I will stick with this. No nicks yet and my face came out almost as smooth as it would have using a new cartridge so I'm encouraged that with practice things will get better. I haven't ventured into ATG yet and did have to use the cartridge to touch up a few hard to reach areas on my chin but I'm going slow and not pushing it. This forum has a wealth of information and really made the decision for me when deciding to switch to a straight.
Thank You,
Todd

Hi Todd,
Welcome to the forum! Lots of us switched to straights to save money, among other reasons. You can over time, if, you don't get hooked like most of us and turn it into a hobby......if that happens, hang on!!!
You've got a nice razor, did you also get a strop to maintain it? In the wiki, linked below you'll find lots of info related to what you'll need and how to use it. You may have already found that, but just in case.
Also linked is beginners tips, a series of articles by gssixgun, Glen, that has all kinds of helpful info.
Keep taking it slow, it sounds like your doing great!! And, again welcome to the forum!!
When you have questions, ask away! Lots of members ready to jump in and help you out.
Regards,
Howard

Thanked: 0Hello All
Yes, I picked up an SRD 3" premium 4 English bridle strop and a couple different soaps/creams. CF cedar/sandalwood being my favorite so far. It's hard to admit but I just ordered a Dovo ebony stainless as well. I justified it by telling myself I'd need at least one backup when I send one in for rehoning. Lol, a Bismark is calling my name..............maybe in another month or so. I can tell this is going to get expensive.

Hey Todd,
That's an excellent strop, I got to try one recently that another member brought by. It really has a nice and, as some say, elegant draw.
Dovo stainless, and thinking Bismarck .....sounds like acquisition disorders have kicked in. You made it about as long as I did on saving money with a straight.
I really like the CF cedar/sandalwood even though I've never smelled the sandalwood in it. Another nice CF is their Lime. It smells like key lime pie tastes.
Sounds like you're having fun, and for me, that's what it's all about.
Keep Enjoying!!!
Regards,
Howard

Thanked: 0Learned a very important lesson today. DO NOT drink 3 cups of coffee before shaving. My shaking hand caused a nice 1" gash below my ear on the jawline. Won't make that mistake again.......

Welcome in Todd,
The coffee won't be as much of an issue after you get comfortable with shaving.
If I do a morning shave I am a full pot in before I shower and shave.
If I do an evening shave 7 out of 10 times I am 1 or 2 adult beverages in.
Sounds as though you are off to a solid start.
Enjoy!

Relax and Enjoy!
