Hello from Scotland
Hi
I'm Mark from not so sunny Scotland. I bought my first straight razor yesterday a Thiers Issard le petit 4/8. I was initially going to get a Feather AC SS but when I researched them, sites like this convinced me to try a proper straight for the full experience.
So far I've resisted the urge to dive straight in and give it a go as despite it being "shave ready" it hardly cuts anything when I use in on my arm. Plus in all excitement at getting my hands on it I didn't really take in what I was told about stropping. So I have a lot of reading and learning to do
Ultimate goal is to be able to shave face and head with a straight razor.
Cheers
Mark

Welcome!
Smart choice in getting a proper straight your first go. Good news is I find its easier to start with a proper straight then try the feather after you're comfortable with the angles.
Enjoy the journey and read all you can.

Welcome to the fold....get that razor honed by a pro...then don't touch the edge or shave arm hair with it...just shave your Hollywood face. And then you will know what " sharp " is. Take it slow and watch all the videos you can.

That's good advice from nessmuck.
You mentioned it being shave-ready, but one person's 'shave ready' may be a far cry from another's. Depending on where you bought it, it may or may not have been sharp enough to give a good shave when you received it. And regardless of whether it was shave-ready when you received it, if it isn't cutting arm hair really easily, it is not shave-ready now. So your best bet is indeed to send it to a honing pro immediately. That can make all the difference in the world.
Although I don't know if there are any UK-based members advertising currently, you can find some honers here in the classifieds:

Good luck!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanks for the warm and advice guys, I really appreciate it.
Going to take it slow and follow the excellent post by Lynn giving advice on doing a bit each day till I get comfortable with the feel of it. First step though is to send away for honing.
Thanks again
