I couldn't believe it. On the box it says it's a boar brush and it comes with a bowl... Just a little over $8. I do have the same soap that I picked up at Walgreen's and it makes a decent lather. Just thought I would share!

This was my first set, and for the price you can't really go wrong when your just starting out.

if you want a good Boar brush that won't shed and will give you a divine experience, plus will not break the bank at all, try a Semogue Boar Brush. They are awesome and just as nice as using a badger.it is a different experience but a good one . http://straightrazorpalace.com/brush...d-brushes.html

Gentlemen, that Van der Hagen set is a good bargain and a fine starter for wet shaving. I have had several sets in the past couple years and passed them on to friends to start them off. There will come a time, however, to move on to more quality brushes and soaps. My friend Nightblade is spot on about the Semogue boar brushes. They are exceptional.

Yep. The VDH luxury set has a real badger brush, brush stand, apothecary mug and a puck of soap. You can find 'em for $25-$30. Might be a good addition to grab both sets for those of you who want a boar and badger brush on the cheap. Both of them do shed like crazy at first, but my badger hasn't shed a hair in I dunno how long, and both boar brushes are mellowed out a good bit.

I've still yet to play with the different VDH soaps... I have the luxury scented soap, but am curious to see how the deluxe, glycerine and select soaps work out (I have a puck of the glycerine already, just have yet to use it and also would bet the unscented luxury performs just fine, so no desire to try it as I like the smell of the scented). Oh, and for the ladies, they also have a shower+shave soap... so I guess that makes 6 soaps altogether?

It's funny how often I hear folks bash VDH, but given my results, I can't understand why... It's actually my go to stuff. I'm sure there are better products out there, like Martin de Candre or Mitchell's Wool Fat for soaps and Simpson and Kent for brushes (which I've yet to try any of these... just going off of reputation here), my VDH stuff just performs and works well for me.

I'd like to try many and many more, certainly, but I have satisfaction in knowing that I can go to my local drug store and grab what I need and it would do me a solid the rest of my days.

I know it's in my technique but one batch of lather will be creamy silk the next will look right but be airy foam. I love the Delux soap though very moisturizing and I really really dig the scent.

Your probably getting the water to soap ratio correct, so you build a fluffy lather, but you may not have enough soap for good comfort?

Possibility, although I tend to go heavy with the water sometimes, love the soap though. Wanting to try ogallala in a bad way.

Ogallala is the Bee's knee's. just add a drop of glycerine. It is a little dry without it.
