It looks good and a very good fake at that. Had I not read what to look out for and double checked the makers mark on the net from my smart phone I would have belived it real.

I would bet it is on ebay by noon tomorrow. It could be up to 35 + years old or much newer than that I guess it could be vintage but still a true fake at that. Be assured I will be watching show and tell for the next couple of weeks to see if I see it again. I sure hope none of the guys here get bit.

Glad you found that 18 page download, nothing like being prepared.

Could I trouble you for the download link? I have several scuttles that I bought before I read up on them. I have some true oldies, but some are the 70's knock offs. I bought one for about $30 and was pleased by the looks. I saw the same exact scuttle at another Antique store and they were asking $135. Both are knock offs.
Here is the site that I found: Real Or Repro ~ Identifying Fakes and Reproductions

    Thanks

    Hello Dograh,
These are the links that I found before I went to the auction. As you can see we both used the same one.
Something about a fake being passed as real just rubs me the wrong way, I sure wish it had not had a mark on it at all.

The 18 page is the first link.

This one is where the fake mark was first exposed. See section “marks”. On the piece I had the mark was across the whole bottom about 2.25"

And finely eBay saves the day see section marks. The one I had in my hand is the mark on the top right.

    I hope this helps,

I appreciate the help. I did buy some scuttles before I knew anything about them. I only know a little bit more now but I try to make minimal repeat mistakes. I have several scuttles that I like but most were repros. I got lucky on a couple of mugs but I have no real old ones. Thanks again for the links and happy hunting.

Idea... I'm still using my Suribachi set in an oversized coffee cup full of hot water. Still feel its the best setup I've tried so far.
