    Default Protecting metal stands

I'm a newbie, so First I would like to say hello. Second I am still reading through the forum when I have time. In he mean time, I was curious about something. I see a lot of post about razor preservation (obviously super important), but I was curious what, if at all, anyone does to keep your metal razor stands from getting spots or rusting over time.

I have a few stands for cartridge razors, a de and a straight edge. Just looking for some insight. I do not know if metal Polish is bad for razors or not or if anyone has a nifty way they handle this.

Metal polish won't hurt a razor but it may stain some types of scales. I haven't run into any but it is always a possibility. Try a carnuba wax on the stand to protect it. Oh, and welcome to the madhouse.

I don't know about anyone else, but one rule I have is NOT to leave my straights and metal stands in the bathroom....

i have the same razor stand bongo, and mine is not rusting.
it has a chrome coating and this will not rust, only if the coating is damaged somewhere and exposes the underlying metal it may rust.

i don't know which razor stands you have but (perhaps you can post a picture)

My shaving brush stand, years old, is beginning to have some spots of corrosion coming through the chrome on the weighted base. Metal polish or wax of some sort would have prevented that. IME metal polish such as Semichrome, Flitz, or Wenol do not have an adverse effect on scales. Welcome to SRP !

I can post pics of my stands once I get back from leave.

I'll put this out there now, one of my stands is from AoS for a cartridge razor. I use that only when I am running late in the mornings for work otherwise I use my DE from muhle. I'm about to start practicing SR once they get back from honing.

I thought about using metal polish on the stands but I do not want to damage the razors or brushes. I know jimmyhad said it won't effect the scales, but what about the metal on my muhle razor? I more worried about that because it's rose gold colored and my wife would be pretty upset if I stained this gift she gave me.

Would metal polish then a wax be a good thing for stand and keep razor safe?

Chrome plated bathroom fittings have been around for a long time. My advice would be to avoid anything abrasive - a soapy cloth should be all that is needed. For my brush stand I cleaned and then used a car wax on the top - it seems to keep the shine a bit longer. I did the same with my Cobra razor and it looks fantastic.

AS said above, something leaving a barrier would be well advised. Tuff-Glide would be excellent, but expensive - you could use it on razors too, though.

You can get a liquid spraygun bottle of PTFE - useful for honing, it also protects metal from rust. I sprayed the one and a half rising butt pairs on my bathroom door with it about three years ago. It gets real cold here in winter, summer is pathetically short-lived and it is quite damp a lot of the time. The butt hinges are mild steel, no paint, just bare steel. Not a spot of rust yet. This PTFE stuff has a name, but I can't for the life of me think what it is.

You used to get it in a very thin white tape for plumbers - I think it was a NASA spin-off, used by plumbers to help hand-tighten joints, but you can get it in a clear liquid too.

    Regards,
    Neil

Back from leave. Here are my razors. The cartridge razor is used every now and then when I am running late from work. DE is my go to razor and I recently got a SR and haven't used it yet.
