Is there any reason I shouldn't just use rubbing alcohol over Barbicide? I mean does it not work as well or does it possibly hurt materials over time comparatively or something? What am I missing?

Short answer: Alcohol's are not as effective in dealing with bacterial cells and bacterial spores. See CDC Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities, 2008 & Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization at PSEs - ncceh

Long answer: Barbercide an approved low level hospital grade disinfectant, effective against almost everything. But for straight razor use 70% rubbing alcohol is good enough in most cases, especially after honing and polishing.

I wouldn't use alcohol on scales especially celluloid. The steel is not likely to have anything living on it after a few weeks of non use. A light polish would be all that's needed.

Whatever's living inside the scales tho is another matter. I would strip them down & thoroughly clean them. Soap & water would do.

I always polish the blade when I get a new razor, I think that will kill most germs/bugs. For the scales I use warm water with dawn and a squirt or two of windex in an ultrasound cleaner (dip scales in only), crud comes off like crazy, hopefully germs as well.

Rubbing alcohol can mess up the finish and fine edge on a blade...and I mean badly if you soak it too long or do not dry it properly. There are a lot more components in Barbicide which will help prevent metal from deteriorating when used properly (soak no more than 10 minutes). I guess if you just swish the blade in alcohol and/or give it a quick wipe then rinse nothing bad would happen, but I have never seen the point. I use Barbicide only on razors I have just gotten and have no idea of their history. After over 4 decades of shaving I have never had anything bacteria related cause me any grief. Shave, rinse, dry, put away has worked well.
