Baking Soda will not harm the box in any way . . . no harm in trying it. Keep us posted.

Update: I filled the box with baking soda and covered it with more baking soda and left it sit in a closed container for about 2 weeks. It removed most of the smell. There is only a faint musty smell yet so I think I will try a fabric softener sheet if letting it sit out in the open doesn't get rid of the rest. If anything I will leave it the way it is since I can deal with the faint odor that is left. The baking soda was a PITA to remove from the box though. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

get some bits off a lavender plant and fill the box with it then leave it for a few days should be fine then worked with any of the musty stuff I ever had leather jackets gloves etc.

There are a thousand jokes running through my head as a I read this. I'm a former Navy Pilot and musty box tickles my funny bone. Sorry.
