Default My first shaving scuttle... now how do I use it?

I got my first shaving scuttle today and I'm not sure exactly how to use it. I thought you put the soap in the top but there's holes in the top so I'm not sure. Name: uploadfromtaptalk1455139347930.jpg

Check out Tim Geering on YouTube. His scuttle looks much like yours.

Yup, soap goes up top. Some soaps are still sold with a rounded bottom to fit that type of scuttle. That is an old style scuttle. The modern ones are different.

This style dates from before the days of hot running water. You would fill the bottom from a kettle or the hot water tank of your wood or coal fired cookstove and use that for your lathering water. Excess water on the soap would flow through the holes back into the base. You would normally also have a basin of hot or cold water to wash up with. When finished the grey water from both went out the window onto a passing politician or onto those annoying kids who won't get off your lawn.

Does anyone have an idea of the date of manufacture for this particular schedule.Name: uploadfromtaptalk1455156056275.jpg

I usually face lather, but even then you can fill the scuttle with hot water and lay the brush in it between passes and your lather will stay nice and warm.
