Thread: Shaving gear for traveling

This is mine:

I'm often (not always!) asked to open the case and to present the shavette for inspection, but when politely explained it's "only a handle, and has no actual blade in it" I was always (dozens of flights) allowed to take it with me. The half-blade is usually packed separately and placed in case's outer pocket - ready to be thrown away, but never asked to. The pre- and post-shave balms are travel-sized, and everything else is solid.

I just came back from a trip where I took a Rolls. I checked a bag this time though and the Rolls was in it. I was going to do it carry-on but I kept thinking, what if they seize it? (Although there are a jillion of them out there, seems like every antique shop I visit has three.)

Great shaves though. Got to really work the strop on those things because it's such a darned short stroke.

It's funny that you responded to this since I am actually traveling this week. I still have not solved my gear issue for traveling yet!

I recently went on a trip and took along a stick of Arko in the 2 oz. twist-up shaving stick/soap container from Maggard. It works perfectly, self contained, clean not messy. No need for a shave bowl, just face lather. That little container is awesome!

Other than that I brought a short horsehide/linen strop that I made for travel, a Semogue boar brush, a sample size Fine aftershave, a small coti (did not need it though), and my razor.

This was in checked baggage, not carry-on.

A good choice IMO. I travel extensively and have my Dop kit chock full but it's functional. I just started using this Ocean Blue travel hone. It's a very small (4 x 1.6 x .6 inches) natural stone Japanese hone. I originally bought it for Fly Fishing at a Fly Fishing store in Utah. But at 12k, it makes a good touch up one for a razor. I paid fairly big bucks for it, but I see Amazon has it now for $29

I'm still going to get a Swaty Barber Hone just because I want one. But I'll probably continue to travel with this little Ocean Blue because of size, convenience and the fact that it does a great "little" job.

My Dop kit is pretty packed. Some pics. My Strop is the 22 inch Red Deer travel strop. I travel with a Cut Throat Gents razor that I honed. They come fairly close to shave ready, but no cigar. You do have to hone them up and re-set the bevel, but they are IMO, a bit finer to work with than a cheap Gold Dollar. I travel with the Weishi DE, and a Facon Shavette as well. The Colonel Conk Travel Soap container (lime soap), some Glycerin, various pre and post and some colognes in the little spray bottles. I am pretty particular about my astringent so I need my homebrew witch hazel with aloe, white willow bark, and tea tree oil. The aftershave for traveling is wintergreen alcohol cut to 40 percent by volume with distilled water. Also some Proraso pre shave and shaving cream in the small round containers.

I've used that old Surrey Boar brush for a very long time. I put it in the pill bottle with holes drilled. But I'm switching it out after this current trip for a Synthetic. A Synth is better than a natural brush to travel with, IMO. Plus there is no soaking needed so you can get going faster in the morning if you need to, although I am shaving more and more in the evening, even while on trips.

I used to travel a lot by air, both domestically and overseas. I always took my beautiful E. A. Berg razor and all the acoutrements (sp?). I never had a problem not even getting out of Brasil (a country we do not have cordial diplomatic relations with) but then the questionable stuff was always in checked baggage.

If I can't take my roll of razors my strop stays home and my Fat Boy in an old knife sheath gets the call. An old pill bottle drilled out works for one of my smaller brushes and tube style shave cream is easy to pack. Just about anything will work as a bowl when you get where you're going.

I realized about a month ago that I bought a travel pen case for SWMBO as an "Add-On" at Amazon for $3.00. She did not like it so she gave it back. I tested it for three straight razors and it works just dandy. It's not padded, but if you put them in so they don't directly lie on top of one another when folded, then they are just fine for traveling. I guess the case is $6.00 via Prime, but it was available to me as an add on for $3.00 with an order of $25 or more.
