Thread: Looking at scuttles

Bought a Robert Becker a few years ago (not sure if they are still available) and the price was very reasonable. I really like it on cold winter days, warm lather will spoil you when it turns cold.........

What are the opinions on the dirty bird pottery scuttles?

I really like my Dirty Bird scuttle. However, I tend to face lather and more frequently use my Dirty Bird brush scuttle as it takes up less space. However, the XL Dirty Bird scuttle will warm the lather more than the brush scuttle because it holds much more water.

I have tried a bunch of scuttles from Moss to Schwarzweisskeramik. The three I keep are a Dirty Bird, Georgetown G20 and Large Schwarzweisskeramik (white, Black, Ceramic) most of the etsy versions I tried looked great but they did not hold enough water to stay hot through three passes. The three I have do. The Moss is another exceptional scuttle that will keep lather warm and can be made to your specifics. For the ridges? smooth works but even the slightest pattern will greatly enhance the lather building. The bumps or ridges do not need to be excessive to add air to your lathering efforts. The smaller the space for the brush, the harder it is to make lather but the warmer your brush will stay.

Lot of great info guys. Thanks. Ill do some looking atound some more. The whatyacallit sound enteresting. But if i got the srd and some epoxy... might be a cheap way out. Who knows. Still enterested in what others have to say and use.

I looked at the Schwarztamacallit and although I liked it a lot it is almost twice as much as the others and the shipping is 18 Euros. I have the George Pottery scuttle and I use that the most. I also have a Dirty Bird Brush Scuttle and although I used it quite a bit I have left it in California at my daughters place in California until I can pick it up. The George Pottery scuttle gets pretty heavy when full so I attached some stickable felt pads on the bottom so don't scratch the bathroom countertop. Good luck in your search.

I use the schwarzweisskeramik XL scuttle for bowl lathering. It works great, keeps things warm just using the water from my tap through 3 passes. Making the lather and inhaling the scent of the soap while you prep to shave is a true delight. Then when you pull the brush out for that third pass and it hits your face with the warm goodness, you can not help but smile ..

The little extra reservoir that you use to fill the basin is nice to hold a brush or a DE razor also.

What I would change is nothing really of the scuttles fault, but more things to keep in mind. Seeing it is so large, it actually is a bit cumbersome when using the standard sized bathroom sink. It fits in just fine, you just need to keep in mind what you are doing when filling it as to be careful not to hit it against the faucet. Also to completely fill the reservoir you need to rock it a bit backward, again just something to keep in mind, so no day dreaming when you are filling this thing.

Also I do not like the appearance personally. It is large, so if I leave it out on my bathroom sink, like I do with other scuttles/bowls, it has a large foot print. So seeing it is so big it becomes a bit of a center piece to the room. This is all fine and dandy until my wife walks into the bathroom ... you get the idea.

The other scuttle I use is Wolf Ceramics. This one is more for face lathering as it is on the smaller side. It also does not keep the lather warm for the third pass. The appearance is great and for what it needs to do it does it well. The design has no lacquer on the bottom of the ceramic so it makes it easier to grip. Overall this scuttle is easy to grip and manipulate while shaving. The inside seems to build lather very quickly the ridges are done well. When I use the Simpson Chubby 2 brush it is difficult to bowl lather using this scuttle. There does not seem to be enough room for the brush and the lather. Price is also something to consider with this seeing it is not cheap for the size. What I would change is the size, if it were just a bit bigger this would be ideal.

They have 3 sizes. That's the largest. Of course even the small is still quite large and yes you really have to be careful handling it or it's really easy to break something on it (ask me how I know). With the large you really can't use it with the typical bathroom sink.

Mine is the "basic" and it's about 25% larger than my Moss Scuttle.

I started with the Moss scuttle and then swept through a lineup of other brands: Dirty Bird, Becker, Georgetown, and a few others I don't recall. Then I found the magical Schwarzweisskeramik scuttle.

After trying all three sizes, all of which I liked, I settled on the basic size, because it suited my needs perfectly, and it took less space on the shave den counter. It fits my needs perfectly. It is also quite handsome — matches my eyes — and useful.

After all these years, my Schwarzweisskeramik scuttle is a part of the shave den landscape.
