    Default Scuttle and Bowl Preferences??

Thinking of buying my first real scuttle or shaving bowl. Wondered if anyone could give any thoughts or suggestions on what I'm looking at or better alternatives.

Came across this scuttle the other day. My badger brush keeps shedding so I believe I'm going to try a synthetic Atomic Rocket from here as it was recommended by another member.

Factory seconds, firsts are sold out. Says there are no cracks or chips though.

I've also came across some nice looking shaving bowls on Etsy. There are some handmade bowls that aren't too expensive.

I truly love my SWK scuttle, top notch all the way.
I'll try to find a link to their site later. Unless someone can drop it in here for me

Funny that this gets posted now.

About a week or so ago I watched a video about the "Best Lather Bowl Ever" on YouTube.

    Here is a link https://youtu.be/l4OGU8ba0uM

Needless to say, it really peaked my curiosity.
It talked about using the Japanese Suribachi bowl, which is actually used as mortar to pulverize food. The inside of the bowl is full of grooves.

Well, the new Suribachi bowl made an appearance at my door today.

Here are a couple of crappy cell phone pics :

I'm looking forward to using this for tomorrow mornings shave.

That is really nice! That seems like it would do a great job.

I've actually seen some metal bowls with a hammered/dimpled finish and a ceramic bowl with pebble like bumps on the bottom. Seems like those would work well for lathering.

I use a rice bowl when I'm not using my Old Spice mug. I don't care for the mug at all really. While I like that the brush handle doesn't clack against the edge of the rice bowl, it is too shallow and the lather wants to go over the edge. Being small with no handle isn't that great either.

As Dave said, i love my SWK Scuttle. Its my only scuttle but i didnt want to go thru 3 or 4 of them to find the best. I also have a Captains Choice Bowl. Nice ridges in the bottom and the lip curves in just a touch. This helps to keep the lather in the bowl and not roll over the sides. In a bowl, this detail makes a big difference to me.
The ridges in Petes bowl look very tiny but i bet it would work out nice. Ive read about this type of bowl before and it get great reviews when it comes to making lather.

I dont know about the bowl you posted but i fell the good points in a scuttle are ridges inside and a large capacity to hold water. The more water in holds inside, the longer it will stay warm. Plus you dont want something so big you need to make a place to keep it. Some of them are big!

Used the Suribachi bowl for the first time this morning.

It is very solid and heavier than I thought it would be.
At 6" it is a little big, but easily handled.
The ridges are more aggressive than they look
I love the way the sides taper in and down. This virtually eliminates banging the brush while whipping up the lather.

I used Castle Forbes soap and got boatloads of lather, way more than usual.

I have to say that this bowl works better than anything that I have ever used.

I'm just curious if its too aggressive, and shorten your brush life. But it does look cool, Pete.!

It's pretty aggressive but doesn't feel like it will hurt a brush. I guess it all depends how hard you mash the brush into the bowl when you are making lather, what type of knot you are using and how old it is.
