What is the proper way to use a Scuttle?!

I'm guessing from your sig you're talking about a modern scuttle, in particlular your Georgetown scuttle.

You fill the inner bowl and water reservoir with warm water, some say from a kettle, or microwave, some say just from your hot water faucet. I would think it depends on how hot the water from your faucet is. You allow the water to warm the ceramic of the scuttle, most do this while showering or using a hot towel on their face. You then empty all of the water out of the scuttle and fill the water reservoir only with hot water. You can then build your lather in the scuttle bowl and the scuttle should keep that lather warm.

I tend to fill my bathroom sink with hot water, fill the scuttle bowl and scuttle reservoir with the hot water and then completely submerge the scuttle in the sink. After my shower, I empty the scuttle of all water, put fresh hot water from the faucet into the inner reservoir and lather in the scuttle bowl.

The only thing I would add is when you lather on your face you get a more dense lather. When you use the scuttle its easy to wip it up too much which can dry it out and make it thinner. To me the scuttle supposedly gives you warm lather and that's its main claim to fame. The older scuttles were a different animal they wre used to directly heat the soap and make the lather in one operation.

Since going from a "cold" mug to a scuttle, I moved more into face lathering. I get quite a thick half-product in the scuttle/brush, apply a few drops of water to the face and lather up with that beautiful warm brush.

Gentlemen,

As a rule, I prefer to make lather directly onto my Hollywood face. When using my Georgetown Scuttle, however, I heat the bowl and the tank from the tea kettle and make the lather in the bowl.

I find that just a thin layer of hot water into the top bowl really helps the "warm" throughout the shave too.
