Half a cake?
I have a shaving mug, I think is called a scuttle but I can't for the life of me figure out how to use it. It is the type without a spout and the top is divided in half, and half of it is sealed off eccept for some holes in it about the size of a pencil. As I understand it you put hot water in the bottom and make a lather in the top and the water keeps it hot. Problem is the soap puck is round and the mug top only has room for half a cake of soap and it is really not deep enough for that. Am I supposed to make a lather in another mug and put it in that mug. Seems like a lot of trouble.

Thanked: 431Sorry bro, can't help. I'm kinda with you, I've seen them and they just don't look very practical to me. I like a nice sized mug or bowl that I can make a nice thick lather / cream in.
Maybe someone knows more and could help both of us understand it.

From what I have read and the way I understood it that the way they work with mine I just fill the bottom with very hot water and Lather in another bowl then put my brush on top of the scuttle rap a towel around it to keep in the heat while my lather bowel is in a larger bowl of very hot water that way my brush and lather stay hot maybe seem like a lot of trouble but I have HOT lather and a nice warm Brush this is my way someone else may have an easier way hope this helps

Thanked: 96Maybe if I didn't have a headache I could picture what you're describing, but your cause would really be helped by a picture (of yours or even one of the same style as yours).

scuttle
Well, I am sorry you have a headache. I hope my post didn't give it to you.
Here is a pic. I can not figure out how to use this thing. There is no way you can put a brush in the hole and only half a cake of soap in the other. ??

I'd say that's a brush scuttle. You can soak the brush in the open side, charge the brush with your soap either in your hand, or from another container, then generate lather by face lathering, or in another bowl before putting your brush back in the scuttle in the side with the holes so you can keep it warm.
This type of scuttle were more useful in the days before hot running water, but can still be handy to have around now. I think that would be a great scuttle to take camping.

Hot water gets poured in the open side and your brush and lather goes in the side with holes in it. The holes are there to allow steam from the water below to travel up and keep your lather nice and warm.
