Default New Razor Storage Option: Sack-ups

While considering all the various options for razor storage, I came across a product called Sack-Ups. They produce cloth rolls for knives and other cases for tools, firearms, and golf clubs. Their products are treated with silicone as a rust inhibitor. I have used their products for firearms and have always been very satisfied. I e-mailed them to ask whether their knife rolls would hold straight razors. I received a call this morning from a product representative, so they seem to offer great, personalized customer service. They said their current offerings for knives would not be long enough for straight razors, but they are working on a 7-roll with long, narrow pockets for straight razors. I was told they would have it on the market in about a month.

I have looked at similar products made of leather. My hang-up with the leather offerings is the price and concerns about rust. For those of us who have WAY too many razors, the leather rolls can be a bit cost-prohibitive. Additionally, while I have never heard complaints of razors rusting in leather, I have seen pistols rust while being stored in leather holsters. Sack-ups offer rust protection, so that concern would be somewhat minimized. Additionally, if the cost of their razor roll is similar to their other products, this should be a much more cost-effective option than leather rolls or wood cases.

I will be watching for their straight razor roll to hit the market. I have a feeling it will be a top-seller for straight razor collectors.

Here is a link to their website. You can check out their knife rolls to get an idea of what the razor roll will probably look like.

    Sack-Ups

    Enjoy,
    David

    Another slap-the-forehead why-didn't-I-think-of-that? moment.

Similar rollups have been made for silverware for years. We have our "holiday silver" in one--inherited from my mother-in-law, I think. It's a brown/maroon velvety fabric treated (at least it was at manufacture) to inhibit tarnish.

Thanks for the link--I'll keep an eye on this.

I had not thought of the flatware roll either. I did a Google search and came up with one made by Zerust. Zerust makes lots of products designed to prevent rust. They have a 6-pocket flatware roll that looks like it would work. However, I still think I will hold out for the Sack-ups product. Sack-ups are made of a fairly thick material that, I think, would offer better protection than the one by Zerust. It looks like the material on the Zerust product is thin. You can see it here:

I have used small plastic tackle boxes by Flambeau that use Zerust dividers. They claim the dividers emit a gas that prevents corrosion. According to the packaging, these dividers are effective for five years. However, because the boxes are made of non-absorbent plastic, I have not felt comfortable storing my razors in them without modification, even with the rust-inhibiting dividers. I use an old soldering iron to poke holes in the plastic to provide airflow. This might be complete over-kill, but I just do not like the idea of my razors being sealed in plastic.

I attached some pictures of the Flambeau boxes at the end of this post. The first picture has the blue Zerust dividers in place. They can be moved around for a custom fit. The second picture is a Flambeau box with holes for ventilation. I removed the dividers to show all the holes.

Again, I have a feeling I will prefer the Sack-ups roll. They will not need modification, so that is a plus. Of course, some may argue that the plastic boxes do not need modification either...it may be unnecessary concern. Another drawback to the Flambeau boxes is that the Zerust dividers supposedly lose effectiveness after about five years. I would rather not have to bother with remembering when I bought the box and replacing the dividers after five years. The Sack-ups seem like a simpler option.

As always, these are just my opinions. Different products might appeal to different folks.

    Sincerely,
    David

I have been using the roll from my sterling spoons for my razors this whole time. Its a perfect fit!
Leather is fine for anything, depending on the tanning process used. oil tanned, or acid based tanning process. guess which one will rust steel?
Of course if you put ANYTHING into a moist pouch, your going to be unhappy indeed!. Doesnt matter what its made of.

Thanks for pointing that out. I completely agree. I do not mean to suggest that any product's "rust inhibiting" properties will enable you to store your razors in the tool shed next to the water system salt. I'm always looking for ways to help prevent rust, but I still believe there is no substitute for keeping razors dry and using oil.

Here's a couple I've made from Braintanned Buckskin.

Tried braintanning a few years back. Just did a few hides. Too much like work for me. But they seem to keep the razors from rusting. Never had a single spot appear in any razor I've kept stored. Of course, braintanned hides will breath like cotton and absorb moisture. It also can be washed with your jeans and dried on a line without being hurt.

Buckskin from a commercial dealer is not braintanned so will not have the same properties.

    Good find!

I love leather, and all products made of leather, but as the OP pointed out, it does have it's shortcomings in regard to storage of steel items..

I plan to pick up one of those Sack-Ups!

    Thanks for posting the info.
