    Default Thrift Store Scuttle

    Hi all,

I went to a thrift store to see if I couldn't find a nice mug or bowl to use for lathering. I ended up buying a couple of items to make a Thrift Store Scuttle

After cleaning the bowls with a little Dawn (also great for cleaning Gulf inhabiting sea cretures and birds), I decided to give the scuttle a test run.

As you can see the metal bowl fits quite nicely into the larger ceramic bowl. The Metal bowl even has a nice ring so you can securely hold the scuttle while lathering. The metal bowl easily transfers heat from the hot water in the larger bowl. When I actually go to shave I'm going to use water heated from my stove in there!

    I hope you guys enjoyed!

    Thanks SRP!

Nice find...I like the pattern on the larger bowl. Always great to find a cheaper alternative to things.

Thanks all! I'm happy with it for $2.50 worth of items :-)

I just tried it with near boiling water from the stove and it kept the lather warm for quite some time. I can't wait to try lathering my face with warm lather

I think I might pull out my Dremel and notch the larger bowl slightly so that the metal bowl's ring can rest in the notches allowing the metal bowl to sit completely flush.

Great find! I also like improvised solutions. That SS cup with the thumb loop would adapt to a lot of different vessels.

I know that there's a scuttle of some sort in my future, because keeping the lather bowl warm and rinsing my str8 in the same small sink just doesn't cut it.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Thanks everyone! I've been practising my lather making with this. It's alot nicer than the Gladware container I was using. I have fairly long fingers so the wide SS bowl is quite convenient so as I don't hit my knuckles on the bowl.

Allow me to add my congratulations as well. That's a nice, relatively inexpensive, arrangement for keeping your lather warm.

Thanks for the kind words all!

I just tried my second shave and used BOILING water in the scuttle. It was so hot that when I lather started to build in the scuttle it would near instantly dry out. I wonder if I use more water in making the lather if it wouldn't dry out.

Anyways, I dumped out most of the super hot water and left about 1" at the bottom of the scuttle and it still kept the lather warm.

Very nice! I didn't realize scuttles were two compartment deals. This makes me want to hit up the thrift store and see what I can put together. Thanks a lot Karma, as if I haven't spent enough time and money on this already.
