Do Shaving Scuttles Really Work?
Do shaving scuttles--the newer ceramic ones--really keep your lather warm? Are they worth it? Just asking as this cold Winter has had my lather cooling off almost immediately. I know I could concoct some sort of double boiler system--a smaller bowl within a larger bowl, but that seems like so much work.

Thanked: 13245In a word, Yes
You could also just keep the lather bowl in the sink full of hot water but the Scuttles make it all easier too.

My Redneck Scuttle (self-watering planter from WalMart) works great. Microwave a cup of water for one minute, 30 seconds and you're good to go.

Yes they do work, but it is really a matter of finding the sweet spot of having warm lather that does not disintegrate during the shave. That seems to be the challenge, I have used alot of scuttle and just settled for heating my bowl up and then making lather , it last a little while but then is dissipates. But then again I know many a person that the scuttles work for them, so to each his own

Thanked: 30I have owned a Moss scuttle for the past year and a half or so and love it! I have the small sized scuttle so basically just rest my brush in it between passes. Sine I face lather, this works perfectly for me. Warm lather? Oh Yea!

Thanked: 1263Yes they do. I have a Georgetown Pottery G5 and absolutely love it! Even if I don't use it as a scuttle but rather just a lathering bowl it works great.

The best heat retention I've ever experienced is the SRD scuttle. It's only designed to hold a prelathered brush (lather on your face or in another mug or your hand or wherever), but it's that smaller surface area that keeps the heat in. If you get something bigger so that you can lather in it, you'll loose heat much more quickly.

I stole my wifes Tea pot with a built in strainer and am using it as a scuttle.
when see noticed i had to go get her a new one. Who would of thought she would get upset by that. $25 at Chapters Indigo. Seal the Strainer with a Silicone.

It may seem to be a tad over the top - but it works and is an invariable part of my routine:
I have a $10 electric water boiler (plastic, from Target) that hides in the vanity under the sink. As I shower it heats H20 to a boil....and I can pour it directly into my Dirty Bird Scuttle (which I pre-heat with warm water which potter Julie of DBS says is unneccesary). I bowl lather in a variety of ways...sometimes with gylicerin, and using any variation of soaps and creams mixed or not.
I get a HOT lather that I am addicted to. Necessary or not (not, I'm guessing) I really like it. And it stays hot till the end.
The end.
