lathering in a moss scuttle?
this scuttle research is going to be the end of me.. i'll most likely go bald in the face before i ever decide on which to purchase..
anyway.. i'm looking at the dimentions and i realize that the small dirtybird scuttle and the larger moss scuttle are almost the same size.. here is a breakdown of inner bowl measurements
small dirtybird inner bowl : bowl opening 3.5" wide x 2" deep inside
large moss inner bowl : bowl opening 3 1/4 " wide x 1 3/4" deep inside
so i'm wondering.. why can't i lather in the moss scuttle?

Chris Moss designed the scuttle so that the walls would be relatively close to the sides of the brush to better transfer and retain heat. I have a small Moss and it did that job very well when I still shaved with hot water. I don't know about lathering in the large as I've never had one. If you decide to order one from Sara Bonneyman make sure you get a shipping quote before you finalize the order. Shipping to the USA from BC was substantial IME.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

thanks jimmy..
shipping is one of the main things keeping me away from ordering the moss.. i plan on facelathering.. so i think the small dirtybird may be the way to go..

There is an SRD scuttle in the classifieds right now. No experience with that scuttle but I love their lather bowls.

If I read Dr Moss's instructions right, he bowl lathers in his scuttle then lathers the face. You should have no problem lathering in the large Moss with a smaller brush. I can't imagine a 28mm Thater doing too well in one though.

Lathering in a Moss Scuttle
Hello, Victor:
I have no experience with the Moss scuttle. From what I have read, the smaller version is not well suited for lathering; however, the larger one works well for lathering.
And, yes, shipping charges from Canada are heavy.
I have the Dirty Bird 1.5 scuttle and it is perfect for me in every way. I also have the Oskar and like it almost as much.
Regards,
Obie

Hey Victor, I did get a chance to lather in my Moss that came in today. I will say that the large size Moss scuttle works well for a small brush. My Plisson is a 17mm knot but has a large bulb shape and I had ample room to swirl, however, you may want to consider the DB if you use larger brushes and want to continue comfortably bowl lathering. The Moss probably will allow for up to a 22-24 mm knotted brush and still lather well. Anything bigger would most likely be cramped. Just wanted to chime in with my 2 cents.
