Bringing up an old thread here! How does one disinfect the scales without damaging them? I hear barbicide will cause them to smell.

Afterall the blade is closed in the scales right? So anything on the blade would contaminate the scales, recontaminating the blade each time you close it?

Oxy-clean works great. It won't damage the scales and it will bring any oxidation to the surface that you can then sand off progressively, depending on what the scales are made of. I use the powder form. I use it on my vulcanite pipe stems that I am restoring.

I,m nit sure of all scales material , but I,ve Imersed the whole razor before, but I haven't done it with Ivory. So test an area, but my scales didn't smell after drying. Tc
