Chestnut razor case renovation!
I recently picked up a late 19th century English chestnut 7-day razor case (Joseph Rogers & Sons, Sheffield). Some of you may have seen it on eBay. The case was pretty scuffed up, and the box had been forced open at some point, pulling the upper lock plate out (you can see it "locked" onto the lower plate). Here are a couple "before" shots of the box.
Here's a shot during renovation. Sorry for the poor quality. The box was taken apart, stripped, sanded, stained and varnished. I succeeded in fixing the lock (an unanticipated couple of hours).
Here are some shots after it was reassembled.
I was able to preserve the interior purple lining. Btw, that's a chunk of ivory on the top: a candidate for a scrimshaw name or some cool icon. I felt lucky that no one felt obligated to carve in initials during the last 100 yrs.
I've only partially loaded up the case, but it'll end up being my backup case to the recent leather SRD roll I acquired!

Even if they did put anything on the ivory, you could always just turn it over and start withh the clean back side...

There's a little chip in the wood of the case on one side beside the ivory. I wonder if that's the result of someone flipping the ivory in the past?!

Nice Job, I like the fact that it still looks "old".

Nice box...and a nice not overly done restoration...I particularly Like the way you've lined up the screw slots on the top hinge...I do so like attention to detail.....Well done.

That looks real nice.

Really nice!
If you carve some symbol representing yourself on the ivory, you have the opportunity to become part of history!

Agreed. I need someone who's a scrimshaw artist, like a tattoo master except in ivory. So far, I've been unsuccessful in finding the right artist. If anyone can make a recommendation--?! Thanks.
