Thread: Shaving mugs

Looking on Ebay and other sites I can't figure out whats the difference in a coffee mug and a shaving mug. I've seen mugs the have a divider. Is that a shaving mug? Thanks, Crazy8days71

There are lots of different kinds of shaving mugs out there, I suppose some qualify as "scuttles" or vice versa. I'm sure the real difference is only the preference of the owner for that style of mug/scuttle/bowl/apparatus. In the case of scuttles or mugs that resemble scuttles, the different compartments are to hold the brush, lather, hot water, etc... depending on the design.

I will say that I recently bought a shaving mug (I know it was a shaving mug because it said so on the front and the design makes it really easy to use: it's like a giant coffee mug with really wide mouth but is a little shallower than your standard coffee mug. Likewise, putting soap in a coffee mug works too, but the extra diameter is really helpful in this case.

I have a green rubber shaving mug with the soap holder in the bottom... I normally use a cappuccino mug I got for $1 it has a huge opening and is very shallow, works great.

Personally I see noe use in "shaving mugs", they just take up too much room and serve no purpose (to me), I prefer to store my soaps in containers with lids, as I always do my lathering in a Scuttle or dedicated bowl.

In general there are not many differences.
My shave mugs are shallower and wider than my coffee mugs.

The mug for my big 28mm brush is a lot wider
and bigger than the mug that works well for my $7 boar
brush. My favorite mug is too deep so I have a
sacrificial puck of $1.50 shave soap in the bottom
to lift up the good stuff.

One quality of a shave mug is durability and
easy to hold in the hand.

A $1 mug from the thrift store or from the "Dollar" store
is a good place to start while you find what fits your

True. There is no difference, only in price.
Important that the foam cup to hold comfortably, conveniently mixed and must keep warm. Top heat keeps vessel of clay.

Shaving foam to do in a bowl, cup in hand, and on the face. A good brush which is aerated, warm water, hot dish and a good foam ready.

I know I am late in the game on this but I thought I would put my two cents in.. I actually use two old sugar bowls from my bachelor dishes and they work great.. even have lids..

Go into walmart and buy an oversized coffee mug and you have a shaving mug for a buck or two. Buy the same thing with a fancy name on it and fancy colored glass or metal and"'ergonomic" handle and you have a $30 or more shave mug.

Scuttles are different animals.

This is my shaving mug and it is approximately the same size as a latte mug however it has webbing internally to help produce lather and a broader top rim. I do not house soap in it although it is wide enough at the bottom to do so and I use it strictly as a lather bowl.

I just use a large coffe mug...melt two pucks of the VDH and add my scent of choice...currently have Gabels Bay Rum in one mug, Pinaud's Clubman in one mug and Joop in the VDH bowl...if I remember correctly, some shaving mugs have the "knob" to hold on to rather than the coffee mug "handle" but I believe it's the only real difference...I think that the scuttle per se is like a double boiler with the shave soap/paste in the inner bowl and the hot water in the outer bowl to heat and soften the shave soap/paste...really though, I've seen coffe mugs used, sugar bowls..all sorts of things...just look around on the site...there are ALOT of REALLY imaginative folks in here with ALOT of great ideas...
