I bought a thin ceramic bowl -- Japanese soup bowl -- at an import shop. Diameter at the top is 5 1/4".

It floats in hot water, and holds plenty of lather for several passes.

Otto linked two pretty good threads there.

Honestly you're very new, even newer than I am. If you have not viewed Mantic59's videos on YouTube you should. You should get the technique down for learning how to create a lather. That's my honest, humble opinion, not knowing how comfortable you are creating it.

Having said this, anything that will create friction for the bristles in your brush or bowl will help you make lather better and can actually make up for bad technique. I have a scuttle that I specifically ordered with crosshatched webbing in the bowl that makes making a lather way too easy. Others have this same scuttle without the crosshatches and still love it (they have concentric rings, instead, which still work well). I've seen one poster who didn't like the crosshatches at all. So YMMV as always.

However, even my shaving mug has little extrusions at the bottom of the cup (very small, I only noticed them the other day) that help make lather by providing a little support with agitation.

Ultimately, I prefer a scuttle best to keep my lather at the temperature I want. I use my shaving cup to re-wet my brush and re-warm my blade.

Really, anything big and deep enough to allow you to maneuver your brush enough to create lather. An oversized coffee mug at Wally World would do nicely. Many of us face lather. That's what I do. I use a scuttle mostly to keep the lather warm. I keep my soaps in bowls and load up the brush right there.
