72 razor air-tight storage
I have my workshop in the semi-damp basement, so I was looking for some sort of air tight storage container that could house ALL the razors I am working on at once. I started with a homemade plexiglass box because I had a sheet of it laying around, and it seemed like a good way to go. Turns out it's hard for me to get that material square... so it was far from airtight. I decided to design some racks into an airtight tool box I already had (should have seen it to begin with!).
I used 1" lathe stock to build 3 fitted inserts. I made them so that they would fit snuggly, but not too snug.
Here you can see how the inserts fit into the toolbox. I put spacers at the four corners of each insert so that the insert that rests on top of it would have clearance for the razors, and maybe some thin foam padding for transport.
This is the jig I used to cut the slots in the lathe stock. I cut all the pieces to length and glued two of them together with rubber cement so that the slots would match up.
I added some lathe runners so that the router would have something to rest on when it got near the edges. You can also see the fence I cobbled onto the jig to guide the router against.
The finished cuts. It's pretty easy to see that the couple on the right side were the first ones! I wasn't using enough pressure against the fence and it drifted a little bit.
Here's two of the inserts glued up. A little bit of drift in the routing doesn't make much of a difference since only two have to match up. You can also see the spacers in the corners of the inserts in this photo.
A handful of razors in their new home. I've also got a Remington dehumidifier that will pull the internal humidity of the box down to about 20-30% relative at ~75 degrees. This should be more than enough to keep rust from getting too crazy.

Clever. I don't have a damp basement, so I luckily don't need anything airtight.
In general (i.e. outside of noticeably damp conditions and while in use) I don't think it would be wise to store razors airtight as it could impart negative effects on the drying of used razors (rust). Kinda why it's not wise to store cigars absolutely airtight.

Wow! That's looks great! I picked up an airtight fishing tackle box that looks similar. Those racks are genius though!
Nice work.

Oh man, you should see how that gun-safe dehumidifier just rips the moisture out of the air! I've got a remote weather station sensor that I put inside the box with the dehumidifier; it started at about 60% relative, and within an hour it had dropped to 30% relative. I hold no fears about used razors rusting. I figure they're going to dry A LOT faster in the box than they would in ambient air.

Very nice design and skilled tool use. What I would recommend, and from looking at your box I think would work, uare the air tight clothing bags that they sell. The ones with the vacuum lock. I'd put the whole thing in one that's a good size for it and 'suck' out that damp air! Believe I bought mine at Walmart. Reusable.

This I like...
Do make sure you do not have
any razors suffering cel-rot. A bad
razor in an airtight container could
be a problem.
A box of baking soda might help but I am
not sure it is sufficient.
Dark and dry are good... Like I said I like this
idea.

+1 On the cell rot issue, im paranoid of enclosing any celluloid scaled razors in any container with another razor.... Infact, I leave anything celluloid out in the open.
Otherwise, great job on the build!
