I have the first one that she made. It's located high on the side. It works pretty well, except that I've switched to face lathering rather than scuttle lathering... Now mine sits idle.
He saw a lawyer killing a viper on a dunghill hard by his own stable; And the Devil smiled, for it put him in mind of Cain and his brother Abel.

Hi, I thought I'd bump this thread rather than starting my own as it involves Dirty Bird's scuttles. I live in the UK and Steve Woodhead has his own pottery business putting out what look to be very nice shaving bowls and scuttles and I was doing a comparison with Dirty Bird's.
I notice that the Dirty Bird ones look to be 2 piece (the inner bowl lifts out). Is this the case and is it a good thing?
Thanks.

She makes two bowls, but the finished scuttle is one piece. You can watch her make one on her website.

Thanks for that. Actually it was that video which made me think that it might come in 2 pieces
If its the one that I watched, she made a lovely outer bowl and a lovely inner bowl, describing each as she made it. I almost thought I should give it a go myself such was the detail level....
Anyway, she didn't seem to stick the 2 bits together at the end and that's what first worried me. But I see that on her site the original scuttle is described as one-piece.
I asked, it'll cost 30 dollars to send to the UK. They do look nice though. Is the webbed base worth having?
Anyone lather soap in theirs or do you use it mostly for cream?

I have the older 1.5 that only has the spiral in the lather bowl. It's all you need. I'm not sold on the vertical web because I think it could cause too much air to be whipped into the lather (may not be a valid concern). The newer ones have the ledge that is supposed to keep the lather from running over the top of the bowl. I don't know if it works, but it sure it works very well when scraping the lather off the sides of the brush - my son has one. They are big, heavy when filled (hard to knock off a counter), and work wonderfully for soap/cream/uber....you name it. I use many different kinds of razors, soaps, creams, brushes, etc....but this is the only lather bowl/scuttle I use (tried others).

Thanks again Obelisk. Yes, I saw/read about the C-shaped handle, "no-creep rim" and all the other good stuff.
I wasn't sure if I wanted the webbed base and/or the dribble port. They're both extras as you'll know, so the style that you have is still sold, and presumably bought by people. Your son doesn't have the webbed base either? I wonder if she'll send me one of each? Maybe I should just buy one with and one without and sell the one I don't want. Not sure the wife will like that idea.
I have pretty hard water where we are so I wonder if the webbed base will help compensate for that. But it might just give the wrong sort of lather as you suggest with the air.

I have the 1.5 with the webbing and one of my sons has the mixing bowl with the swirl. I prefer the swirl. Not that the webbing does a bad job or anything like that, just that I'm a bit concern that the webbing is a bit harsher on the brushes (maybe unfounded). I do get good lather and happy with it. But I also get good lather from the swirl my son has and I can't tell a difference.
Like LegalBeaver, I have swicht to face lather. About 80% of my shaves are now face lather. So the scuttle is been used more like a brush scuttle (when I remember to put it in) than a mixing scuttle. So for face laterrers I would recommend the smaller (original size) Dirty Bird. Just MHO, Double O
